Album Review: Emergency Volume One & Two by The Tony Williams Lifetime If you’re a fan of jazz that punches you in the gut and leaves your ears buzzing, Emergency Volume One and Two by The Tony Williams Lifetime is a ride worth taking. Released in 1969 under Polydor in the UK, this double album is a wild fusion of Jazz-Rock energy, blending technical wizardry with raw emotion. It’s not just music—it’s an experience. And if you’re into tracks that make you stop what you’re doing and think, “What the heck did I just hear?”—this one’s for you. The album kicks off with "Emergency," and holy smokes, it sets the tone like nothing else. From the first note, Tony Williams’ drumming grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. The track feels like controlled chaos, with Larry Young’s organ swirling around John McLaughlin’s razor-sharp guitar licks. You can tell these guys weren’t just playing—they were feeling. Every beat, every riff feels alive. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to drive fast or maybe even pick up an instrument yourself. Then there’s "Vashkar." This track hits differently. It starts slow, almost meditative, but don’t get too comfy—it builds into something fierce. The interplay between the musicians here is electric. McLaughlin’s guitar solo is a standout, weaving through the rhythm section like a daredevil on a tightrope. What sticks with me about "Vashkar" isn’t just the technical brilliance—it’s how it feels like a conversation. Each musician is speaking their piece, and the result is pure magic. Other tracks like "Spectrum" and "Something Spiritual" bring their own flavors to the mix, but they all share that same restless energy. The whole album feels like a snapshot of a band pushing boundaries, experimenting, and having fun while doing it. It’s not perfect (some parts might feel a little indulgent if you’re not in the mood), but who cares? Perfection’s overrated anyway. Looking back, Emergency Volume One & Two wasn’t just ahead of its time—it still feels fresh today. Fusion and Jazz-Rock fans will eat this up, but honestly, anyone who loves music that challenges them should give it a spin. Sure, it came out in ’69, but listening to it now feels like finding a hidden gem in your grandparent’s attic—a little dusty, but oh-so-cool once you dust it off. Here’s the kicker: after hearing this album, I couldn’t help but wonder—if Tony Williams and company had access to modern tech, would they have blown our minds even harder? Guess we’ll never know. But hey, what we do have is more than enough.

Tony Williams formed Lifetime after leaving the Group in 1969, around the time was finished. The formative trio included guitarist (who turned down Davis' offer to join his group since he felt he would more likely be able to play his own compositions with Williams) and Hammond organ innovator . Ex-Cream bass player Jack Bruce joined just after the first album was recorded for live dates and the second album, after which McLaughlin left in order to pursue his own career and Bruce left for other projects including his own career. Larry Young remained for the third album (in 1971), which featured a much larger ensemble. For the fourth Lifetime album the personnel had changed completely as the direction shifted further toward something less radical. The original formation recorded two albums ( and ) and a single called - a McLaughlin composition that was also included to huge success in his second Mahavishnu Orchestra album. Lifetime's sound was on the very cutting edge of fusion for many listeners. Loads of distortion, unconventional lyrics and erratic drumming were the trademarks of this remarkable project.

According to John McLaughlin, this song (Vashkar) was played on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (guest host: Flip Wilson) in 1970. McLaughlin left Lifetime after two albums due to his being dismayed at Monte Kay and Jack Lewis (mentioned as "the management") who gave Flip Wilson more attention, with "The Flip Wilson Show" than Tony Williams' group itself who ended up playing at small sized venues if I'm not mistaken.
