Album Review: Hangin’ On To My Baby by Tracey Dey (1964) Tracey Dey’s Hangin’ On To My Baby is one of those hidden gems from the 1960s pop scene that deserves more than a passing glance. Released in 1964 under the Amy label, this album hits you with its breezy charm and unpretentious energy. Arranged and conducted by Calello, it’s clear he knew how to craft something catchy without overthinking it. The record doesn’t try too hard—it just feels right for its time, like a summer day with the radio on full blast. Let’s talk tracks. The title song, “Hangin’ On To My Baby,” grabs your attention immediately. It’s upbeat, fun, and packed with enough pep to stick in your head for days. Tracey’s voice has this sweet but confident vibe—like she knows exactly what she wants and isn’t afraid to say it. You can almost picture her leaning against a jukebox somewhere, owning the room. There’s nothing groundbreaking here, sure, but sometimes simple works best. This track reminds me why early ‘60s pop still holds up—it’s got heart, even if it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Then there’s “Ska-Doo-Dee-Yah.” Yep, you read that title right. It’s playful, quirky, and impossible not to hum along to. The rhythm skips along like a kid hopping through puddles after rain. What makes this track stand out isn’t some grand production trick; it’s the sheer joy dripping off every note. It’s the kind of song that makes you wonder why we don’t hear stuff like this anymore—songs that feel effortless yet totally infectious. Not gonna lie, I caught myself singing “Ska-Doo-Dee-Yah” while making coffee the other morning. Try getting that outta your brain! Looking back at Hangin’ On To My Baby, it’s easy to see how it might’ve gotten overshadowed during the British Invasion era when everyone was losing their minds over bands like The Beatles. But honestly? That’s part of its charm. It’s a slice of pure Americana, untouched by trends or pressure to be anything other than itself. Here’s the kicker though—listening to this album today feels kinda refreshing. In an age where everything seems so polished and calculated, Tracey Dey’s music comes across as refreshingly human. Plus, who wouldn’t want to ska-doo-dee-yah their way through life?

It’s so incredible to me how over so many Amy/Philips girl group discs Calello experimented with these hyper-short yet incredibly weird, contagious solos! That amazing Mellotron solo on Tracey’s I Won’t Tell..Or Hedy Sontag’s He Never Came Back.. they’re all so nuts and beautiful and get stuck in my head.
Nice track friend, thanks.
