Review by Bruce Daniels

A Psychedelic Psauna In Four Parts: A Chaotic, Mind-Bending Ride Through 1991’s Underground UK Scene Alright, buckle up, because this album is a wild trip that doesn’t care if you’re ready for it or not. A Psychedelic Psauna In Four Parts by Various Artists isn’t just an album—it’s like someone dumped a bucket of acid-drenched paint onto your brain and told you to make sense of it. Released in '91 on Delerium Records (yep, the same label behind Porcupine Tree), this thing screams “we don’t give a damn” while also being weirdly genius about it. First off, let’s talk genres and styles. Pop/Rock? Sure. Rock? Obviously. But then you’ve got Alternative/Indie Rock, Indie Rock again (they really wanted to drive that point home), Psychedelic Rock, Neo-Psychedelia, Garage Rock Revival, Space Rock… yeah, this album throws so many hats into the ring, it’s hard to keep track. And honestly? That chaotic mix works. It feels like a bunch of stoned musicians decided to jam out their inner demons and somehow ended up creating something half-coherent—and entirely unforgettable. Now, I gotta call out two tracks here that stuck with me like gum under my shoe. First up: “Mind Train Jam.” Holy hell, this one’s a doozy. Imagine sitting on a train that never stops accelerating, except instead of seats, there are pulsing neon lights and screaming guitar riffs everywhere. This track grabs you by the throat from the first note and refuses to let go. The bassline groans like it’s been possessed, and the drums? They're relentless—like they were recorded during some kind of fever dream. If you’re looking for chill vibes, skip this one. But if you want something that punches you in the face and makes you say, “Whoa, what the f was THAT?”—this is your ticket. Then there’s “Cold Rain & Snow,” which pops up twice on the tracklist because apparently once wasn’t enough. At first listen, it feels like a moody little ballad trying to find its footing. But stick around, and it morphs into this hypnotic spiral of sound that drags you deeper and deeper. The vocals have this raw, almost broken quality to them, like whoever’s singing has seen way too much life crap but still can’t stop laughing at how absurd it all is. By the time the second version rolls around later in the album, it hits different—like hearing an old friend tell the same story after a few drinks. Familiar, but twisted just enough to mess with your head. What else? Oh yeah—the credits deserve a shoutout. Lophophora Willamsii clearly had a hand in shaping this madness (concept AND liner notes? Respect). And props to Swordfish for mastering this chaos. Seriously, whoever mastered this beast deserves hazard pay. So yeah, A Psychedelic Psauna In Four Parts is messy as hell, but that’s kinda the point. It’s not polished; it’s not perfect. It’s rough around the edges, unapologetically weird, and absolutely dripping with attitude. You won’t love every second of it—but you’ll remember it. Like that one night when everything went sideways but somehow turned into the best story ever. And honestly? Listening to this album feels like finding an old VHS tape in your attic. You don’t know where it came from, why it exists, or who made it—but once you press play, you can’t turn away. Weirdly beautiful, right?
