Cigar Classics Volume One: The Standards – A Nostalgic Dive into Jazz and Pop Vibes Alright, let’s talk about Cigar Classics Volume One: The Standards. Released in 1997 by Hip-O Records, this album is like a time machine that drops you smack dab in the middle of swingin’ big band vibes, smoky jazz clubs, and those smooth-as-butter ballads your grandparents probably slow-danced to. It’s got all the feels—Pop, Jazz, Swing, Big Band, and even some vocal magic that’ll have you humming along before you know it. Now, I’m not gonna lie, this record isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it’s more like a well-worn leather chair—comfortable, familiar, and kinda perfect for chillin’. With tracks like “Black Coffee” and “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” it’s no wonder why this one sticks in my brain. “Black Coffee,” man… that track just hits different. The moody vibe paired with those silky vocals? It’s like sipping espresso at midnight while staring out a rain-streaked window. You can almost feel the steam curling up from your cup as the singer laments life’s little heartaches. And then there’s “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”—a legit classic done justice here. It’s romantic but not too cheesy, emotional but not over-the-top. Something about how the horns swell behind the voice makes me wanna grab someone (anyone?) and twirl ‘em around the room. What I dig most about this album is how unapologetically old-school it feels. These aren’t flashy remixes or modern reboots; they’re straight-up tributes to the originals. Tracks like “Let The Good Times Roll” bring the energy, while slower numbers like “As Time Goes By” remind you to take a breath and soak it all in. Plus, who doesn’t love a bit of “Mr. Sandman” thrown into the mix? That tune’s got charm for days. But here’s the thing—I didn’t expect to get so lost in an album made by “Various Artists.” Usually, compilations feel kinda scattered, right? Like someone just threw together random songs without much thought. Not this one though. There’s a flow to it, like each track belongs exactly where it is. Maybe it’s because every song shares that same retro DNA, or maybe it’s just good curation. Either way, props to whoever put this baby together. So yeah, if you’re into music that tells stories without needing flashy tricks, check out Cigar Classics Volume One: The Standards. Honestly, listening to it feels like finding a dusty vinyl in your uncle’s attic and realizing it’s gold. Weirdly enough, it also made me crave a slice of cherry pie. Go figure.

It's a tough comparison to listen to this version and Sarah Vaughan -- I have to give it to Peggy Lee's performance, I feel like the emotion and overall delivery is more solid than Sarah's version. Both are good, but Peggy Lee's takes my vote.

Just sat here, 2022, thinking I had invented everything just sang about.

Nearly dropped my cup of coffee when I realised it was me.
