Holodeck Vision One: A Genre-Bending Odyssey That Sticks With You Released in 2018 by the US-based label Holodeck, Holodeck Vision One is a sprawling, genre-defying compilation album that feels like stepping into someone’s fever dream of electronic and rock experimentation. With styles ranging from ambient drones to synthwave bangers, krautrock grooves to darkwave moods, this record doesn’t just push boundaries—it obliterates them. And honestly? It’s kinda hard not to get lost in it. The album features tracks from various artists, each bringing their own flavor to the table. Mastered by Joshua Eustis (you might know him from Telefon Tel Aviv) and with artwork by Gabriel Chicoine, it’s clear they weren’t messing around when crafting this sonic journey. But let’s cut to the chase—what makes this thing memorable? First up, there’s “Sister Planet.” This track hit me like a neon-lit spaceship cruising through an empty desert highway. The synths are lush but restrained, letting the rhythm build slowly until you’re fully submerged in its hypnotic vibe. It’s one of those songs where you find yourself zoning out, staring at nothing in particular, only to snap back and realize five minutes have passed. I kept coming back to it because it strikes this perfect balance between danceable energy and introspective chill. Plus, the title alone sparks all kinds of sci-fi daydreams—who wouldn’t want to visit a sister planet? Another standout is “Crossing The Blood Brain Barrier.” Okay, yeah, the name sounds like something straight out of a cyberpunk novel, but the music delivers on that promise. It starts off subtle, almost eerie, with these swirling textures that feel like they’re creeping inside your head—which, hey, fits the theme perfectly. Then BAM! Around the halfway mark, it drops into this driving beat that’s equal parts unsettling and addictive. By the time it fades out, you’re left wondering if your brain chemistry has actually changed while listening. Wild stuff. What really stands out about Holodeck Vision One is how cohesive it feels despite being such a patchwork of genres and artists. Tracks like “Dream Last Night” and “Ceiling Of The Mind” lean more toward dreamy, ethereal vibes, while others like “Shahmat” and “Rodan” bring heavier, darker edges. It’s like flipping through channels late at night and discovering every station is playing something weirdly compelling yet totally different. One thing worth mentioning is how much credit goes to the mastering job by Joshua Eustis. Every track has this polished-but-raw quality to it, like it was recorded in some underground studio but still sounds crisp enough for headphones. And can we talk about the cover art? Gabriel Chicoine nailed it—a surreal, retro-futuristic design that screams “listen to me if you dare.” By the end of the album, I couldn’t help but think about how rare it is to stumble across something so eclectic yet oddly unified. Sure, not every track will be your cup of tea (looking at you, “Insect Hell”), but even the ones that don’t click right away grow on you after a few listens. So here’s my hot take: If Holodeck Vision One were a person, it’d probably be that quirky friend who shows up uninvited to parties but ends up being the life of the event anyway. You might not always get what they’re saying, but damn, do they make things interesting. Final thought: Listening to this album made me crave tacos for some reason. Maybe it’s the cosmic vibes or maybe I’m just hungry. Who knows? Either way, give it a spin—you won’t regret it.

Just found this song in 2019 and I ADORE it. I love the emotions stirred by the acoustic guitar, Deb's voice and the spectacularly unique sound scape of the synth. Sometimes I cry when I listen to this and other times I go on a mind trip! This is a true piece of art! Animal or cannibal it's divinity expressed through FLESH, but with the knowledge that there is MORE!
