Jazz Odyssey Volume 1: The Sound of New Orleans 1917-1947 – A Treasure Trove of Jazz Roots If you’re a fan of raw, unfiltered jazz and blues straight from the heart of New Orleans, Jazz Odyssey Volume 1: The Sound of New Orleans 1917-1947 is an absolute goldmine. Compiled by Γιώργος Χαρωνίτης (Giorgos Haronitis) and released in 2003 across Greece, the US, and Italy, this album feels like stepping into a time machine that takes you back to where it all began—those smoky clubs, bustling streets, and steamy dance halls of early 20th-century New Orleans. The record spans genres like Swing, Dixieland, Classic Female Blues, New Orleans Jazz, and Early Jazz, with tracks pulled together from labels such as Columbia, CBS, EGEA, and Jazz & Τζαζ. With its rich mix of styles and eras, it’s not just music—it’s history bottled up for your ears. And let’s not forget the killer artwork by Milton Glaser; paired with photography by Λευτέρης Αρβανίτης (Lefteris Arvanitis), the whole package screams authenticity. Now, onto the tunes themselves. While there are way too many tracks to cover (seriously, this compilation has more songs than a Sunday church service!), two stood out enough to stick in my head long after hitting play. First up, “Mahogany Hall Stomp.” Man, oh man, this one hits hard. It’s got that rollicking energy that makes you want to grab someone and start swinging around the room—even if you don’t know how to swing dance. The brass section jumps out at you like it's saying, “Hey buddy, we’ve got something important to tell ya!” And honestly? They do. This track perfectly captures the spirit of New Orleans Jazz—loud, proud, and full of life. You can almost picture yourself in some dimly lit club, drink in hand, soaking up every note. Then there’s “It Happened In Monterey,” which flips the vibe entirely. It’s smooth, almost cinematic, like a black-and-white film unfolding before your eyes. The melody carries this dreamy quality that pulls you right in, making you wonder what kind of love story inspired it. Was it written about a chance meeting? A missed connection? Whatever the backstory, this tune lingers in your mind like the scent of fresh-baked pie cooling on a windowsill. What really sets this compilation apart isn’t just the stellar tracklist—it’s the fact that these recordings feel alive. Like they’re whispering secrets from another era, reminding us how timeless good music truly is. Sure, the sound quality might be a bit rough around the edges here and there, but that’s part of the charm. These imperfections make it real, human even. As I sit here reflecting on this album, I can’t help but think about how much our world has changed since these songs were first recorded. Back then, people didn’t have Spotify or fancy headphones—they had live bands and Victrolas. Yet somehow, this collection still resonates today. Maybe because deep down, we haven’t changed all that much. We still crave connection, rhythm, and stories told through song. Oh, and here’s a fun thought: imagine playing this album during a modern dinner party. Some folks would probably dig it, while others might ask when Billie Eilish is coming on. But hey, that’s the beauty of jazz—it doesn’t care whether you get it or not. It’ll keep doing its thing anyway. So go ahead, give Jazz Odyssey Volume 1 a spin. Who knows? You might find yourself dancing in the kitchen—or at least tapping your foot under the table.

My grandfather used to tell us the story of how my grandmother would sing this to my father and uncle when she fed them. When she stopped singing, they would yell, "Sing it 'adain,' Mommy," because they couldn't pronounce the G!

I love the really early Jass numbers. If you compare them to the ragtime orchestra music that was around at the time, it must have sounded like an entirely new musical dimension to those hearing it for the first time.
