Live in Chicago by VAST: A Sonic Punch to the Gut (In a Good Way) So, you’re scrolling through your playlist options, and bam—you stumble across Live in Chicago by VAST. Released back in 2008, this album is like that friend who shows up uninvited but ends up being the life of the party. It’s got rock grit, electronic vibes, and an industrial edge sharp enough to cut glass. And yeah, it’s live—which means no studio magic cleaning things up. What you get is raw energy straight from the Windy City. Let me just say this upfront: Jon Crosby, the mastermind behind VAST, doesn’t do “boring.” This record feels like he raided his own catalog, mashed together some killer tracks, and let the chaos unfold on stage. With genres spanning rock and electronic, plus an industrial twist, it's basically a genre-blending fever dream. Oh, and props to realvast.com for putting it out there into the world. Now, onto the meat and potatoes—or maybe the whiskey and cigarettes, given the vibe. There are so many tracks here, it’s hard to pick favorites without sounding like a gushing fanboy. But two songs stuck with me like gum under a barstool: "Flames" and "Pretty When You Cry." “Flames” hits different. Like, really different. From the first beat, it’s clear this isn’t your average love song. The lyrics feel like a punch to the chest—raw, desperate, almost too personal. And then there’s the build-up. Man, does it deliver. By the time the chorus kicks in, you’re not just listening anymore; you’re living it. I mean, who hasn’t felt like they were burning alive in their own skin at least once? Whether you’re headbanging or staring blankly into space, this track demands attention. Then there’s “Pretty When You Cry,” which somehow manages to be both haunting and beautiful. It’s one of those songs where the melody sneaks up on you while the words knock the wind out of you. Listening to it live adds another layer of intensity—you can practically hear the emotion dripping off every note. It’s messy, it’s vulnerable, and honestly? It’s kinda perfect. The rest of the album follows suit, flipping between heavy hitters like “Generica” and quieter moments like “Desert Garden.” Some tracks blend seamlessly into each other, creating these weird, dreamlike sequences that make you forget you’re even listening to individual songs. Others hit you over the head with their sheer audacity. Either way, it keeps you hooked. What strikes me most about Live in Chicago is how unapologetically human it feels. Sure, VAST leans heavily into techy sounds and layered production, but this album reminds you there’s a beating heart behind all the noise. And now for the random thought nobody asked for: If this album were a person, it’d probably be the guy at a party wearing leather boots and neon sunglasses, handing out cryptic advice while simultaneously breaking your heart. Weird flex, but I respect it. Final verdict? If you’re into music that makes you think, feel, and question everything, give Live in Chicago a spin. Just don’t blame me if you end up obsessing over it for weeks.
