Album Review: Woman of Paris by Vicki Benet & Charles Dant and His Orchestra Alright, let’s talk about Woman of Paris. If you’re into smooth, jazzy pop with a vocal twist, this Aussie gem from Festival Records might just hit the spot. It’s got that classic 1960s vibe—think smoky lounges, dim lights, and a singer pouring her heart out while an orchestra sways in the background. Sure, it’s not reinventing the wheel, but sometimes you don’t need reinvention; you just need good tunes. First up, “Mon Homme.” Oh man, this track sticks with me. Vicki Benet takes this French standard (yep, made famous by Edith Piaf) and gives it her own spin. Her voice is warm, like someone wrapping you in a cozy blanket while telling you a story. The orchestration is lush but never over-the-top, letting her vocals shine. And honestly? There’s something magical about hearing those French lyrics glide over a big band sound. It’s classy without trying too hard. Then there’s “It’s So Nice To Have A Man Around The House.” I mean, come on—that title alone makes me chuckle. It’s playful, cheeky even, and the kind of song that feels like it was written for a retro sitcom theme. The melody bounces along, and Vicki sounds like she’s having fun with it. You can almost picture her winking at the mic as she sings. It’s lighthearted, sure, but isn’t that what we all need sometimes? The rest of the album has its moments too—“Autumn Leaves” is hauntingly beautiful, and “Hymne A L’amour” will tug at your heartstrings if you let it. But these two tracks stood out to me because they feel so different yet equally memorable. One’s emotional and timeless, the other’s quirky and fun. That contrast keeps things interesting. Here’s the thing: listening to Woman of Paris feels like stepping into another era. Not in a “wow, this is old-fashioned” way, but more like “oh hey, maybe life was simpler back then.” Or maybe not simpler—just… slower? Whatever it is, it works. And here’s my random thought to wrap this up: I bet Vicki Benet would’ve killed it on TikTok today. Can you imagine her singing snippets of “Mon Homme” or dancing around to “It’s So Nice…”? Yeah, totally underrated crossover potential right there.
