Album Review: In Atlantic City by Wild Bill Davis & Johnny Hodges If you’re a fan of soul-jazz, In Atlantic City is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Released in 2015 but rooted deeply in the golden age of jazz, this collaboration between Wild Bill Davis on organ and Johnny Hodges on alto saxophone feels like a warm hug from an old friend. With its mix of laid-back grooves and sharp musicianship, it’s hard not to get lost in its charm. The album was originally recorded decades ago but got a fresh lease on life thanks to labels like RCA Victor and Speakers Corner Records. It’s got that vintage vibe with modern mastering—perfect for audiophiles who love their vinyl crackle but also want clarity. And let’s be real, when you’ve got legends like Bobby Durham on drums and Lawrence Brown on trombone backing you up, how could it go wrong? Two tracks stand out for me personally: “It’s Only a Paper Moon” and “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing).” On “Paper Moon,” Hodges’ saxophone just sings. Like, seriously, it’s so smooth it almost feels illegal. The interplay between his lines and Wild Bill’s organ creates this effortless swing that makes you wanna pour yourself a drink and stare out the window at the rain. Meanwhile, “It Don’t Mean A Thing” brings the energy. This isn’t some sleepy lounge number—it’s a full-on toe-tapper. You can practically hear the band grinning as they play. Bob Brown’s tenor sax adds layers to the melody, while Dickie Thompson’s guitar licks keep things spicy. If this track doesn’t make you move, check your pulse. What strikes me about In Atlantic City is how timeless it feels. Sure, it came out in 2015, but it sounds like it could’ve been recorded yesterday—or fifty years ago. The liner notes by Stanley Dance give some nice context too, though honestly, the music speaks for itself. Here’s the thing: listening to this album feels like stepping into another world. It’s polished without being pretentious, complex without being inaccessible. And maybe that’s why it sticks with you long after the needle lifts off the record. Or maybe it’s just because “It Don’t Mean A Thing” will forever have me humming under my breath during awkward elevator rides. Either way, it’s worth every spin. Final thought? Jazz purists might call this essential listening, but even casual fans will find something here to love. Just don’t blame me if you start randomly quoting Duke Ellington in everyday conversations.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The album *In Atlantic City* by Wild Bill Davis & Johnny Hodges, released in 2015, is a treasure trove of soul-jazz goodness. It features the legendary Johnny Hodges on alto saxophone, whose smooth sound defined an era. Interestingly, the tracklist has some quirky inconsistencies—like "Belle Of The Belmont" being listed three times with slightly different spellings! Clearly, someone was having a moment with typos. Despite that, it's a must-listen for jazz fans, blending classic tunes like *"It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)"* with fresh energy. Plus, it’s cool to see so many iconic labels like RCA Victor and BMG Music team up to bring this piece of history back to life.
