Review by Lorenzo Sendar

Alright, let’s dive into Ochsenfrosch EP by Zebra Centauri. This little gem from 2015 is one of those releases that sneaks up on you—minimal electronic vibes with a German precision twist. Released under the URS label, it feels like this EP was made for late-night headphone sessions when everything else is quiet. First off, the track “Doppelknoten” hits different. It's got this hypnotic rhythm that loops around your brain until you're fully locked in. The beat isn’t too busy; it just breathes, giving space for these tiny bleeps and bloops to pop out at random moments. You know how sometimes music can feel overly polished? Not here. There’s something raw about it—it’s not trying too hard, but still manages to grab hold of you. I remember listening to it while walking home once, and suddenly every step matched the pulse of the song. Felt kinda magical, honestly. Then there’s “Ochsenfrosch,” the title track. If I had to pick one word for it, I’d say… stubborn. Like, it doesn’t care if you get it right away or not. It builds slowly, layering sounds so subtly you almost don’t notice until BAM—you’re knee-deep in its weird little world. There’s this one moment where the bassline shifts ever so slightly, and man, it gave me goosebumps. Feels like catching a glimpse of something rare—a shooting star or an awkward frog chillin’ in a pond (yeah, maybe that’s why they named it after an ox-frog?). Anyway, it sticks with you. The whole thing has this understated charm, almost like Zebra Centauri knew exactly what buttons to press without overdoing it. It’s minimal, sure, but never boring. And coming from Germany—a place known for its love affair with electronic music—it feels authentic, unpretentious even. Thinking back, what really stays with me is how personal this EP feels. It’s not shouting for attention or trying to be the coolest kid at the party. Instead, it invites you to lean in closer, listen harder. Weirdly enough, it reminds me of cooking spaghetti late at night: simple ingredients, nothing fancy, but done right, it’s pure comfort. Oh, fun fact: Did you know "Ochsenfrosch" literally translates to "bullfrog"? Makes me wonder if Zebra Centauri were secretly huge fans of amphibians—or just thought it sounded cool. Either way, works for me.

About Zebra Centauri

Zebra Centauri is a music production duo based in Dresden, Germany. After organising events as part of the dubious Floppy collective for several years, they developed their musical love affair in countless hours of excessive jam sessions. With results varying greatly in quality, tempo and style, they soon discovered their shared love for dragged beats and weird synths, as well as a common disregard for established dance-floor standards like easily mixable intros or popular tempo choices. The Zebra likes to run free and do what it feels like. And it often feels like slowly scuttling across the tundra with the occasional neigh that ceremoniously sounds like a deep resonant synth. In October 2015, the two released their first EP called Ochsenfrosch (meaning Bullfrog in german) on URS records, URSLs little sister.
