Album Review: Na Dobranich by ДахаБраха – A Journey Through Ukrainian Roots Released in 2005 under the Guta Records label, Na Dobranich by Ukrainian band ДахаБраха is a vibrant tapestry of folk traditions and experimental sounds. The album captures the essence of Ukraine’s rich musical heritage while pushing boundaries with its eclectic mix of genres. It’s not just an album; it feels like a living archive of stories, myths, and emotions that resonate deeply with listeners. The tracklist itself reads like a map of cultural exploration. Songs like U Kyevi and Vdova immediately grab your attention, but two tracks stand out as unforgettable moments on this sonic journey: Kozak and Rusalochky. Kozak hits hard with its raw energy. The song seems to channel the spirit of Ukrainian history—bold, defiant, and unapologetically alive. Its driving rhythm and haunting vocal delivery stick with you long after the final note fades. You can almost picture yourself galloping across open plains alongside legendary warriors. It's one of those tracks where you're not sure if you should dance or sit quietly in awe. Maybe do both? On the flip side, there’s Rusalochky, which takes a more ethereal approach. This piece feels like stepping into a dreamworld filled with water nymphs and moonlit forests. The harmonies are delicate yet powerful, creating an atmosphere that’s equal parts eerie and enchanting. Listening to it feels like being wrapped in a foggy morning mist—you know something magical is happening, even if you can’t quite explain it. What makes Na Dobranich so compelling is how seamlessly it blends old-world charm with modern experimentation. Tracks like Afryka and Vesnianky Chill Out showcase this balance beautifully, mixing traditional instruments with electronic beats. It’s clear that ДахаБраха isn’t afraid to take risks, and those risks pay off big time. If I had to nitpick, some might say the album leans a bit too heavily into nostalgia at times. But honestly? That’s part of its charm. In a world obsessed with chasing trends, Na Dobranich reminds us to look back and honor our roots without losing sight of innovation. Reflecting on this album, it strikes me how timeless it feels. Even though it came out nearly two decades ago, it still resonates today. And here’s the kicker—it made me realize how much we underestimate the power of folklore. These aren’t just songs; they’re echoes from another era, speaking directly to our souls. Who knew Kozaks and water spirits could sound so fresh in 2023?
