- About Me: Dr. Urmi Ashar is the President & CEO of NACD Three Rivers Chapter. She manages Market Cognition, a consulting firm that draws on her multidisciplinary expertise and multicultural sensitivities to help businesses gain competitive advantage. In her organizational work, she uses insights derived from the study of medicine, science, education and business as well as from the experience of bridging two cultures – American and Indian – to build complex, non-conventional solutions to organizational challenges.
She currently serves on the board of Excela Health System and serves as the Vice Chair for Nominating and Governance Committee and is on the Strategic Planning Committee for Excela Health. She has served as the Chairman of the CEO search committee for Excela Health and also served as the chair of the ad-hoc Comp. Committee. She also serves on the board of Community Design Center of Pittsburgh. Urmi serves on the National NACD’s Education initiative to do research and revamp the curriculum needs for director education to keep up with the current rapidly changing environment in Corporate Governance. She has developed the syllabus and curriculum to teach Corporate Governance at Carnegie Mellon’s H. John Heinz lll School of Public Policy and Management Institute & Institute for Social Innovation. In the past she has led development and management of research projects in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience at Carnegie Mellon University. She was a member of the founding Advisory Council for Strong Women and Strong Girls, in Pennsylvania. Urmi is a passionate advocate for the needs of the gifted and talented, and has actively led parent initiatives at the Davidson Institute for the Talented and Gifted.
She earned her MBA from the University of Colorado and a Diploma in Entrepreneurship for Life Sciences Technology from The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She has a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and MD from KEM Hospital and the University of Mumbai’s Seth G.S. Medical College.
