The Sharpest Cuts by 999: A Punk Rock Gem That Still Stings (2019) Alright, let’s talk about The Sharpest Cuts by 999. This punk rock album came out in 2019 under Gutterwail Records, and it’s got that raw, unapologetic energy we all love from the genre. Hailing from the US, this record doesn’t mess around—it’s straight-up gritty, fast-paced, and dripping with attitude. Plus, the artwork? Wild. Shoutout to Kenney Garrett and Sven Gjurček for making something that screams “punk” before you even press play. Now, I’ll be honest—I didn’t expect much when I first hit play. But man, there are two tracks on here that stuck with me like gum on a shoe: “Signed Dangerous” and “Nasty Nasty (Live).” “Signed Dangerous” kicks off with this gnarly guitar riff from Guy Days that just grabs you by the collar. Arturo Bassick’s vocals? Full throttle. The guy sounds like he’s lived every word he’s singing, and it’s impossible not to feel it too. It’s one of those songs where you can almost picture yourself in some dingy club, mosh pit raging, sweat flying everywhere. By the time the chorus hits, you’re hooked. Simple as that. Then there’s “Nasty Nasty (Live).” Oh man, this version has so much energy, it feels like Pablo Labritain’s drumming might burst through your speakers. There’s something electric about live recordings when they’re done right, and this is definitely one of those moments. You can hear the crowd losing their minds, which makes you wanna lose yours too. It’s chaotic, loud, and absolutely perfect. One thing I gotta mention—this album is packed with tracks, but some repeats kinda threw me off. Like, do we really need three versions of “Boys In The Gang”? Maybe it’s just me, but after the second listen, I was ready to move on. Still, props to Marcy Dewey for keeping things tight arrangement-wise, and Joey Kelly’s production gives the whole thing a polished edge without losing its DIY soul. So yeah, The Sharpest Cuts isn’t perfect, but it’s real—and sometimes that’s better. Listening to it feels like flipping through an old photo album full of smudged Polaroids and scribbled notes. It’s messy, sure, but it tells a story. And honestly? If you’re into punk rock, you’ll dig it. Oh, and here’s a random thought to leave you with: whoever decided to put Diane Farris on engineering duties for track B6 deserves a medal. No clue why she only worked on one song, but hey, maybe she was busy saving the world or something. Who knows?

999 are an English punk rock band, formed in London in December, 1976. From the period of 1976 to 1985, the line-up of 999 consisted of Nick Cash (vocals, guitar - real name Keith Lucas, not to be confused with Nicholas John Cash), Guy Days (lead guitar), Jon Watson (bass guitar) and Pablo LaBrittain (drums). (As a result of injuries sustained in a motor accident, LaBrittain was temporarily replaced by drummer Ed Case aka Paul Edwards in 1980.) Jon Watson left the band in 1985; being replaced by Danny Palmer, who remained with the band until 1991. Palmer was replaced by Arturo Bassick, who remains the bass guitarist with 999 to this date. Between 1978 and 2007, 999 released fourteen singles and twelve studio albums. Five of the singles released by 999 between 1978 and 1981 charted within the Top 75 in the UK Singles Chart, with one further single released by 999 in 1978, Homicide, charting within the Top 40. In addition, as a result of extensive touring in the United States in the early 1980s, the band's third and fourth studio albums: The Biggest Prize in Sport and Concrete, each charted on the U.S. Billboard 200. Despite having formed in 1976, 999 have only experienced two permanent changes to their original line-up and has continued to record and play live to the present day, leading AllMusic to describe the band as "one of the longest-lived groups of the punk era."

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool little fact: The album *The Sharpest Cuts* by 999 features not one, but three different versions of the track "Boys In The Gang," including two live recordings from a performance at WFMU in New Jersey. It’s like getting multiple perspectives on the same song—raw energy and all. Plus, the artwork was handled by two different artists, Kenney Garrett and Sven Gjurček, giving the album a unique visual edge to match its punk rock vibe.
