Scrashhh by Alberto Baldan: A 1978 Italian Time Capsule That’s Still Funky Fresh Let’s get one thing straight—Alberto Baldan's Scrashhh isn’t your run-of-the-mill album. Released in 1978 under the Lotus label, this quirky gem is like a musical lasagna with layers of pop, jazz, Latin vibes, funk, soul, disco, chanson, and easy listening all piled on top of each other. It’s chaotic, it’s bold, and honestly? It kinda works. The man behind the madness (or should I say “Bembo” behind the brilliance?) is Alberto Baldan Bembo himself, who not only arranged but also co-wrote most of the tracks alongside S. Schifano. You can tell he wasn’t afraid to take risks—this record feels like an Italian summer vacation where someone accidentally spilled espresso on the turntable. And let me tell you, that’s a good thing. Now, onto the tracks. With titles like "Profondamente Deluso Dal Tuo Comportamento" (which roughly translates to “Deeply Disappointed By Your Behavior”) and "Meno Di Così Non É Possibile" (“Less Than This Isn’t Possible”), you know you’re in for some emotional rollercoasters wrapped up in groovy beats. But two songs really stuck out to me, and here’s why: First up, we’ve got "Da Domani Lo Giuro". This track hits you right in the feels while simultaneously making you want to shake your hips at a discothèque. The melody has this breezy, carefree vibe, but when you listen closely to the lyrics, it’s basically about promising to change tomorrow… which, let’s be real, is something we’ve all said after eating an entire pizza alone on a Friday night. The blend of smooth vocals and jazzy undertones makes it impossible not to replay. Plus, there’s just something oddly satisfying about hearing someone swear they’ll do better over funky basslines. Then there’s "Il Mio Amore É Partito", or as I like to call it, “When Love Leaves Town.” This one’s more melancholic, dripping with nostalgia and heartbreak. Imagine sitting by a Venetian canal at sunset, watching gondolas drift by as you sip wine and wallow in self-pity. Yeah, it’s that kind of vibe. What makes it memorable, though, is how effortlessly it switches between sorrowful balladry and upbeat sections that almost trick you into thinking everything will be okay. Spoiler alert: it won’t. But hey, at least the music sounds great! What strikes me most about Scrashhh is its unpredictability. One moment you’re vibing to funky rhythms that scream Studio 54, and the next you’re swept away by tender melodies that feel like they belong in a French café. It’s messy, sure, but so is life—and sometimes messy is exactly what you need. So would I recommend this album? Absolutely. Is it perfect? Not even close. But maybe that’s the charm. Listening to Scrashhh feels like flipping through an old photo album—you don’t always understand what’s going on, but you can’t help smiling at the memories. And if nothing else, it’s proof that Italians have been masters of mixing genres since way before Spotify playlists were a thing. Who knew disappointment could sound so danceable?
