Album Review: El Mandarín Maravilloso Suite Concierto Hary Janos Suite by Bartók & Kodály Released in 1978 under the Spanish label Zafiro, this album brings together two giants of classical music—Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály—in a performance that’s both fiery and polished. Conducted by Bohdan Wodiczko with The Polish Radio And TV Symphony Orchestra (and featuring the Katowice Conservatory Chorus for good measure), it’s an ambitious project that feels like stepping into a smoky concert hall somewhere in Eastern Europe. The photography by Oronoz on the cover? A bit dated, but hey, it sets the mood. Let’s talk tracks. First up is "Entrada Del Emperador Y Su Corte" from Kodály’s Hary Janos Suite. This one grabs you right away with its bombastic brass fanfare—it’s the kind of opening that makes you sit up straight even if you’re just lounging around in sweatpants. You can almost picture some grand emperor strutting into the room, robes flowing dramatically behind him. It’s over-the-top, sure, but isn’t that what we love about classical music sometimes? That unapologetic drama? Then there’s "El Mandarín Maravilloso - Suite Concierto" by Bartók. This piece sticks with me because of how chaotic yet controlled it feels. There’s this restless energy driving it forward, like you’re chasing after something you’ll never quite catch. The percussion really shines here; it doesn’t just accompany—it tells its own story. By the time the strings kick in, you’re hooked. It’s intense without being overwhelming, which is no small feat. What strikes me most about this album is how alive it sounds. Sure, it was recorded decades ago, but the passion bursts through every note. Wodiczko clearly knew how to wrangle these massive compositions into something cohesive. And props to the orchestra—they don’t miss a beat, even when things get tricky. If I had to nitpick, I’d say the pacing between tracks could feel a tad uneven at times. But honestly? That’s part of the charm. It’s not perfect, but it doesn’t need to be. Sometimes imperfection adds character, ya know? Final thought: Listening to this album felt like finding an old vinyl in your grandparents’ attic—dusty, maybe a little forgotten, but full of surprises once you give it a spin. Who would’ve thought a record from Spain in ’78 could remind us why Bartók and Kodály still matter today? Definitely worth a listen if you’re into classical music with teeth.

Born: 1881-03-25 (Nagyszentmiklós, Magyar Királyság). Died: September 26, 1945 (New York, New York, United States). Béla Viktor János Bartók was a Hungarian composer, pianist, ethnomusicologist and collector of Eastern European and Middle Eastern folk music (born 25/03/1881 in Nagyszentmiklós, today Sânnicolau Mare, Romania - died 25/09/1945 in New York, U.S.A). He is considered one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century; his vast production reveals a daring and restless harmonic instinct that is affected by his passionate studies on Hungarian folk songs. Typical elements of Béla Bartók style (derived from Hungarian, Transylvanian and Romanian folklore) consists in the use of irregular rhythms and a clear preference for obsessive rhythms. His compositions have sonorities, sometimes abstract, but often harsh, rough and barbaric. Married to the pianist . His 2nd son, became a recording engineer.
