Album Review: Abelardo Y Eloísa by Bloque – A Forgotten Gem of Spanish Prog Rock Let’s cut to the chase. Abelardo Y Eloísa by Bloque isn’t your run-of-the-mill prog rock record. Released in 1978 under Chapa Discos, this Spanish masterpiece has aged like fine wine—complex, bold, and just a little rough around the edges. Produced by Vicente Romero, it’s one of those albums that sneaks up on you, leaving an impression long after the needle lifts off. The album kicks off with “Undécimo Poder,” and holy smokes, does it grab you. It starts with this brooding guitar riff that feels like walking into a dimly lit cathedral at midnight. Then, outta nowhere, the drums explode into this thunderous groove, pulling you deeper into its labyrinthine structure. What sticks with me is how the track balances chaos and control. One moment, it’s all intricate time signatures and soaring solos; the next, it’s stripped back to haunting vocals and sparse instrumentation. You don’t just listen to “Undécimo Poder”—you experience it. Then there’s the title track, “Abelardo Y Eloísa.” If “Undécimo Poder” is the storm, this one’s the calm before—and after. The melody here is achingly beautiful, almost cinematic. It’s got this melancholic vibe that reminds me of staring out a rain-streaked window while thinking about stuff you probably shouldn’t. The interplay between the keys and guitar creates these lush soundscapes that feel both intimate and epic. And yeah, maybe I’m reading too much into it, but isn’t that what great music’s supposed to do? Make you overthink life for a bit? Bloque wasn’t trying to reinvent the wheel with this album—they were perfecting it. Sure, some parts might feel a tad indulgent (this is prog rock we’re talking about), but that’s kinda the charm. This was 1978 Spain, mind you, when musical experimentation wasn’t exactly encouraged. Yet here’s Bloque, carving out their own space in a genre dominated by British and American acts. Hats off to ’em. If I had to nitpick, I’d say the production could’ve been sharper. Some sections get lost in the mix, especially during the more chaotic passages. But honestly? That rawness adds character. It makes Abelardo Y Eloísa feel human, not polished to death like so many modern releases. Here’s the kicker: listening to this album today feels like discovering a secret. Like finding an old book in a dusty library that no one’s touched in decades. It’s a reminder that great music doesn’t always come from the obvious places or people. So if you’re a fan of prog rock—or just curious about Spain’s underrated contributions to the genre—do yourself a favor and give Abelardo Y Eloísa a spin. Just don’t blame me if it messes with your head in the best way possible.

About Bloque

A Spanish Progressive band with a few albums out. BLOQUE blend synth and Spanish vocals with electric and acoustic guitar (lots of electric) in a wide variety of styles (some people dislike this). They were strongly influenced by the jazz, flamenco, and hard rock. "Hombre Tierra Y Alma" is strongly of the 70's italian scene with a strong folk- influenced feel in a way similar to BANCO or PFM. "El Hijo del Alba" is also excellent. Their best is "Musica Para La Libertad" which includes the incredible instrumental tracks. Sixto F. Ruiz - guitar, vocals / Juanjo Respuela - guitar, vocals / Juan Carlos Gutiérrez - organ, mellotron, synthesizers, vocals / Luis M. Pastor - bass / Francisco L. Baños - drums, percussion
