Review by Beristain Oñederra

Chants Bohémiens: A Folk Journey with Boris Alexandrov and the Red Army Choir Released under the Czechoslovakian label Supraphon, Chants Bohémiens by Boris Alexandrov alongside Balalaïkas Et Choeurs De L'Armée Rouge offers an evocative dive into the world of folk, traditional, and country-inspired tunes. This album isn’t just music—it’s a cultural artifact, blending Russian vocal prowess with bohemian flair. With its rich arrangements and heartfelt execution, it’s no wonder this record has left such a mark. The artwork, credited to Alain Carrier, sets the tone with its rustic charm—simple yet striking. But let’s get to what really matters: the tracks themselves. Among the standout pieces are “Good Night” and “Green Grass,” both of which linger in your mind long after the needle lifts from the vinyl. “Good Night” feels like a warm embrace at the end of a tiring day. The harmonies, led by soloists Sergeiev and A.A. Ejzen, wrap around you like a cozy blanket. There's something raw and unpolished about the delivery that makes it feel authentic. You can almost picture a dimly lit room, filled with laughter and clinking glasses, as these voices rise together. It’s not perfect—but that’s exactly why it sticks. Sometimes imperfection is the most human thing we can ask for in art. Then there’s “Green Grass.” If “Good Night” is a lullaby, this one’s more like a lively toast. G.I. Babaiev and Rasumovski bring energy to the track that’s downright contagious. The interplay between the balalaika strings and the choir creates a sense of joy that’s hard to ignore. Listening to it feels like stumbling upon a village celebration where everyone’s invited—even if you don’t speak the language. Weirdly enough, I found myself humming this tune while folding laundry last week, which says a lot about how catchy it is. What strikes me most about Chants Bohémiens is its ability to transport listeners to another time and place. It doesn’t try too hard to impress; instead, it lets the melodies and voices do the talking. And honestly? That’s refreshing. In today’s age of auto-tuned pop stars and overproduced beats, this album reminds us of the power of simplicity and tradition. One thing worth mentioning is how the credits reflect the collaborative spirit of the project. From Alain Carrier’s cover design to the individual contributions of each soloist, every element feels intentional. Sure, some might argue the production could use a bit of modern polish, but then again, maybe that’s missing the point entirely. As I sat down to write this review, I couldn’t help but think about how music connects us across borders and generations. Here I am, decades later, writing about an album made in Czechoslovakia by Russian artists. Who would’ve thought? Maybe that’s the magic of folk music—it doesn’t need fancy gimmicks or flashy visuals. All it needs is heart. And boy, does Chants Bohémiens have plenty of that. Final thought? If you ever find yourself craving something real, something that smells faintly of pine trees and old stories, give this album a spin. Just don’t blame me if you start randomly singing “Green Grass” during breakfast.
