Butts Band - The Butts Band

Review by Marc Hall

The Butts Band - A Wild Ride Through 1969’s Sonic Chaos Let’s get one thing straight: The Butts Band isn’t just another relic from the late '60s. This album punches hard, blending blues grit, rock swagger, and pop sensibilities into something that feels raw yet timeless. Released in 1969 under Blue Thumb Records, it’s a chaotic masterpiece that doesn’t try to be perfect—and thank god for that. With credits stacked with heavy hitters like John Densmore (yeah, THAT John Densmore) on drums and Robbie Krieger shredding lead guitar, this record had no business being as slept-on as it was. Now let’s dive into the meat of it. Out of all the tracks, two stand out like sore thumbs—or should I say, sore butts? First up is “Kansas City.” Holy hell, does this track slap. It’s got that greasy groove dripping with attitude, thanks to Phillip Chen’s basslines hammering away like he’s running out of time. Jess Roden’s vocals are raspy and unhinged, like he’s screaming at you from some smoky bar where everyone’s too drunk to care about pitch. And when Roy Davies drops those keyboard riffs? Forget it. You’re not walking away unscathed. Then there’s “Sweet Danger,” which hits different—it’s sneaky smooth but packs a punch. The rhythm guitar work by Roden lays down a hypnotic vibe while Krieger’s solos explode like fireworks. It’s the kind of song that makes you wanna drive fast, break rules, and maybe even fall in love recklessly. There’s something dangerous about how catchy it is; you’ll hum it for days before realizing it’s stuck in your brain like gum on a shoe. What sticks with me most about this album is its unpredictability. One minute you’re cruising through funky jams, and the next you’re knee-deep in emotional ballads that hit harder than they have any right to. Sure, there are repeats—like “Pop-A-Top” showing up twice—but honestly? That just adds to the charm. It’s messy, sure, but so is life. Here’s the kicker though: why don’t more people talk about this record? Maybe it’s because the name sounds ridiculous, or maybe it’s because classic rock snobs only care about Zeppelin and Floyd. Either way, The Butts Band deserves better. Hell, if aliens landed tomorrow and asked us to explain human music, I’d hand them this album first. Not because it’s perfect—but because it’s real. Oh, and one last thing: whoever thought naming themselves “The Butts Band” was a good idea? Absolute legends.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The Butts Band’s self-titled album, released in 1969, features John Densmore and Robbie Krieger of The Doors. Yep, the same guys who brought you "Light My Fire" and "Riders on the Storm." While it didn’t quite reach the fame of their main gig, this project showcased their versatility. With bluesy rock vibes and smooth pop influences, it’s like hearing a different side of their musical personalities. Plus, Jess Roden’s soulful vocals add a unique touch. Definitely worth checking out if you’re into classic rock with a twist!

Not to be compared with the Doors' stuff, Krieger and Densmore dare digging some different territory on here. In so doing they hire Bronco's Jess Roden on vocals and other obscure musicians. The result is pleasently funky and Roden does a good job: "Be with me" over the rest, but let's say I like this album's mood.

Bought this album (vinyl) in a second hand store in 1978 - then lost it in a move. All time favourite from the period and totally underrated.

After the death of Jim Morrison the remaining Doors put out two pretty
good albums to little effect. A decision was made to find a new lead
singer and the band repaired to Europe to start auditions. Ray became
bored and headed back to the States, leaving Robbie and John to fend for
themselves. They put together a crack band with Jess Roden on vocals
and Phil Chen on bass. Without Ray they couldn’t use the name “Doors”,
so The Butts Band was born. A really cool set of tunes. 1974.
