Review by Peter TCHALAWOU

Album Review: La Mer Nocturnes by Claude Debussy If you're into classical music with that dreamy, impressionist vibe, La Mer Nocturnes is an album worth diving into. Released in 1984 on the Erato label as part of the INA Collection Archives, this French gem brings together some serious talent—Micheline Grancher, Camille Maurane, Etienne Dufresne, and more—under conductor Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht. It’s like stepping back in time to hear how Debussy's masterpieces were performed decades ago. The album covers a mix of styles from opera to pure orchestral magic, but what really stuck with me were two tracks: "La Mer" and "Prélude à L’Après-Midi d’un Faune." Let me tell ya why these stood out. First off, "La Mer." Oh man, it’s like Debussy bottled up the ocean itself and poured it into notes. The piece moves through waves of sound (pun kinda intended), starting calm and mysterious before building up to this big, crashing energy. You can almost feel the salty breeze and see the sunlight dancing on the water. What got me was how the orchestra nails those shifts—the strings shimmer, the brass roars just right, and the whole thing feels alive. It’s not just music; it’s storytelling without words. I found myself zoning out while listening, picturing stormy seas and quiet shores. Pretty wild for something written over a century ago! Then there’s "Prélude à L’Après-Midi d’un Faune," which might be one of my favorite pieces ever now. It starts so soft and hazy, like waking up from a nap in a sun-dappled forest. The flute solo? Absolute perfection. Like, whoever played that deserves all the awards. There’s this sensuous flow throughout the track where everything blends together seamlessly—woodwinds, harps, strings—it’s hypnotic. Honestly, it made me want to grab a picnic blanket and chill under some trees somewhere far away from real life. One thing about this recording that adds charm is its vintage quality. It doesn’t have that super-polished sheen modern recordings often do. Instead, it feels human, raw even. Like you’re sitting in the room with the musicians, catching every little breath and creak. That takes nothing away from the performance—in fact, it makes it more special. What surprised me most though? How much Villon’s ballads added depth to the album. They’re not flashy or loud, but they bring this poetic intimacy that balances out the grandeur of pieces like "La Mer." It’s almost like Debussy wanted to remind us that even amidst nature’s epic beauty, personal stories matter too. So yeah, La Mer Nocturnes isn’t your typical “put it on repeat” kind of record. But if you let it wash over you (ocean pun 2!), it’ll stick around in your head long after the last note fades. Funny enough, while writing this review, I realized I’d been humming "Prélude" all day. Guess that means Debussy won again. Final thought? This album proves that good music doesn’t need to shout to be heard.

About C Debussy Micheline Grancher, Camille Maurane, Etienne Dufresne, Chœurs De Femme, Chœur De Femmes De La RTF, Orchestre National, DE Inghelbrecht

Born: August 22, 1862 (Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France). Died: March 25, 1918 (Paris, France). Claude Debussy was a French composer. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Debussy's music frees itself of the academicism of the late nineteenth century (in particular that of the Austro / German School) to offer new perspectives and dimensions to twentieth century music. Through the use of pentatonic scales, of the whole tone scale, he returns to the ambiguity of modal systems and accomplishes a revolution of traditional harmony, different from the Wagnerian revolution. Debussy's music frees itself from the tyranny of the bar, which with its periodic accents forces the rhythm to a pre-ordered repetitions; as a consequence of these metric-harmonic innovations the classical forms are abandoned.
