Cannonball Adderley’s European Tours 1960-61 – A Soul-Jazz Punch to the Gut Alright, let’s cut the crap. If you’re a jazz head or just someone who digs raw, unfiltered soul-jazz vibes, Cannonball Adderley’s European Tours 1960-61 is gonna slap you upside the head and leave you grinning like an idiot. Released in 2016 on Italy’s Musica Jazz label, this live album captures Adderley and his killer band tearing it up across Europe during their prime years. It's messy, alive, and dripping with that kind of energy only live recordings can deliver. First off, let me tell ya about “This Here.” Man, oh man—this track hits like a freight train. Nat Adderley’s cornet stabs through the mix while Cannonball’s alto sax wails like he’s preaching some kinda gospel truth. And don’t even get me started on Louis Hayes’ drumming—he’s swinging so hard he might as well be levitating off the stage. You feel every note, every beat. It’s not perfect; there are moments where things threaten to fall apart, but that’s what makes it real. That’s why you remember it. This ain’t no studio-polished snoozefest—it’s jazz how it’s supposed to be: sweaty, unpredictable, and full of life. Then there’s “Bohemia After Dark,” which feels like walking into a smoky club at 2 AM when everyone else has gone home except for the die-hards still vibing out. Victor Feldman lays down these piano lines that sound like they’re straight outta another dimension, all while Sam Jones’ bass keeps everything glued together. Cannonball takes over halfway through, blowing notes that could probably knock a grown man off his feet. The whole thing builds and builds until you’re practically gasping for air by the end. Yeah, it’s THAT good. Now, here’s the kicker: Jimmy Cobb hops on drums for “New Dehli” (track 10), and suddenly the vibe shifts completely. Cobb brings this cool, laid-back groove that contrasts sharply with Hayes’ fiery intensity earlier. Junior Mance steps in on piano too, adding a touch of elegance without losing the grit. By the time Nat’s cornet solo kicks in, you realize this band doesn’t just play music—they own it. They make each track its own beast, unpredictable yet totally cohesive. So yeah, European Tours 1960-61 isn’t just another live album—it’s a goddamn time capsule. Listening to it feels like eavesdropping on history, like you’ve stumbled into something sacred you weren’t supposed to hear. But hey, maybe that’s the point. Maybe jazz isn’t meant to sit quietly in the background. Maybe it’s supposed to grab you by the throat and remind you you’re alive. And honestly? That last thought kinda freaks me out. Like…what if more albums did that? What if music stopped being safe and started throwing punches again? Food for thought, I guess.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *European Tours 1960-61* by Cannonball Adderley wasn’t released until 2016, even though the recordings are from over 50 years ago. It’s a soul-jazz gem that captures live performances in Italy. Two drummers split duties—Louis Hayes played on most tracks, but Jimmy Cobb jumped in for one. And get this: it includes Cannonball himself introducing the band mid-set, giving it a raw, intimate feel. Jazz fans probably already know how special this is.
