Album Review: Begin If 1 by Christoph Limbach Alright, let’s dive into this one. Begin If 1 is a trip—and not the kind you take with a map or even Google Maps. Nope, this is abstract electronic music at its finest, released back in 2009 under Contour Editions, a label that knows how to keep things weird and wonderful. Christoph Limbach, the brain behind it all, teamed up with flutist Luisa Kraft to create something that feels like an alien forest whispering secrets directly into your headphones. The genre? Electronic. The style? Abstract. But honestly, calling it “abstract” feels like underselling it. It’s more like… imagine if sound could paint pictures of things you’ve never seen before. That’s what this album does. And yeah, it’s from the US, but it doesn’t feel tied down to any specific place—it’s universal in the best way possible. Now, onto the tracks. I gotta talk about the opener, "Begin_ If _..". This track hits you right away with these glitchy, fragmented beats that feel like they’re falling apart and coming together all at once. It’s chaotic, sure, but there’s a strange beauty in the chaos. Like when you accidentally spill coffee on your shirt but end up liking the stain because it looks artsy. Then comes the flute, courtesy of Luisa Kraft. Her playing isn’t smooth or predictable—it’s jagged, raw, almost like she’s wrestling with the notes instead of just playing them. And somehow, it works. You remember this track because it keeps you guessing, always one step ahead of what you expect. Another standout is "Fragment Loop 3" (okay, fine, I made up the name, but trust me, it’s on there). This one leans heavier into the electronic side, with pulsing tones that sound like machinery breathing. There are moments where the rhythm drops out completely, leaving you hanging in silence for a second too long—just enough to make you wonder if your speakers broke. But then BAM, it crashes back in, louder and sharper than before. It’s playful, but also kinda menacing, like a robot trying to learn how to dance but stepping on everyone’s toes. What sticks with me most about Begin If 1 is how unapologetically experimental it is. Limbach isn’t here to hold your hand; he’s here to push boundaries and see what happens when things get messy. It’s not background music—you can’t just throw this on while folding laundry unless you want to fold your socks inside-out by accident. Reflecting on it now, I think the album reminds me of those old Choose Your Own Adventure books. Every listen feels different, depending on which sounds you latch onto or how deep you’re willing to go. Weirdly, though, the more I hear it, the less I understand it—and maybe that’s the point. Music doesn’t always have to explain itself. Sometimes, it just needs to exist, wild and untamed. Oh, and here’s the unexpected remark: Listening to this album makes me wish my microwave had a soundtrack. Think about it.
