De La Soul’s Ring Ring Ring Remix: A Wild Ride Through Soundscapes You Didn’t Know You Needed Alright, let’s get into it. De La Soul’s Ring Ring Ring Remix album from 1991 is one of those projects that just sneaks up on you. It’s not your typical rap record—it’s more like a kaleidoscope of vibes, stitched together with beats that make your head nod and feet shuffle in ways they’ve never shuffled before. With genres spanning electronic and hip-hop, plus styles dipping into pop rap, hip-house, instrumental goodness, and even disco (!), this remix effort feels like an audio passport stamped across France, the UK, and Germany. Now, I gotta shout out two tracks here because they’re burned into my brain like toast left too long in the toaster. First off, there’s “Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey) (Sax Mix).” Man, oh man—this version hits different. The saxophone? Smooth as butter melting over pancakes. But what makes it stick is how playful it feels. Like, you can almost picture Prince Paul (the co-producer wizard) sitting back, sipping coffee, saying, "Yeah, throw some sax on it. Why not?" And boom—you’ve got a remix that grooves so hard it could turn your living room into Studio 54 for three minutes straight. Then there’s “Afro Connection At A Hi 5.” This jam is pure energy bottled up in wax—or vinyl, if you’re fancy. There’s something about the rhythm that grabs hold of you; maybe it’s the way the percussion pops or how the bassline worms its way into your soul. Whatever it is, it’s infectious. Every time this track comes on, I find myself doing awkward dance moves no human should attempt. Credit goes to De La Soul themselves—they produced this banger—and engineers Bob Powers, Mike Teelucksingh, and Tim Latham for making sure everything sounds crisp AF. The whole project is kinda wild when you think about it. Here’s De La Soul—a group known for pushing boundaries—teaming up with labels like Tommy Boy Music, Fnac Music, and EastWest Records GmbH to drop a remix album in Europe. It’s like they looked at the map and said, “Let’s take these songs global!” And honestly? They nailed it. Even mastering guru Tom Coyne made sure every beat landed perfectly. But here’s the kicker: listening to Ring Ring Ring Remix feels less like hearing music and more like stepping into someone’s chaotic yet brilliant dream. It’s messy, experimental, and full of life—kinda like flipping through old photo albums where half the pictures are blurry but still tell the best stories. So yeah, while most people might remember the original De La Soul Is Dead album, don’t sleep on this remix gem. It’s proof that sometimes taking risks pays off big time. Who knew adding a sax solo or cranking up the Afrobeat influence could feel so right? Final thought? If aliens ever invade Earth and ask us to explain humanity through music, we should totally play them this album. Just don’t blame me if they start breakdancing.
