Review by Luke Seguin-Magee

Stop EP by DJ ESP Woody McBride: A Raw Slice of Acid-Infused Techno Released in 2006 under the Wreckless Recordings label, Stop EP by DJ ESP Woody McBride is a gritty homage to the anarchic spirit of electronic music. Hailing from the US, this four-track release dives deep into the realms of acid and techno, delivering an unfiltered experience that feels like it was cooked up in the backroom of a Detroit warehouse—or maybe even the Department Of Motor Vehicles if they handed out beats instead of licenses. The standout track here is undoubtedly "STOP (ESP Woody McBride Anarchist Remix)." It's chaotic but controlled, with squelching acid lines that feel like they're trying to escape the mix altogether. The kick drum pounds relentlessly, creating a hypnotic groove that somehow manages to be both aggressive and danceable. What sticks with me about this remix is how McBride plays with tension; just when you think the track might spiral out of control, he reins it back in with precision. It's not perfect—there are moments where the layers clash slightly—but that raw edge makes it memorable. This isn't polished, radio-friendly techno; it's sweaty, underground energy bottled up for those late-night hours when reality blurs. Another gem on the EP is “Who’s The Long Hair?”—a cheeky nod to rave culture and its quirky eccentricities. The track opens with a sample that sounds like someone whispering secrets at a party before diving into a pulsating rhythm layered with warped synths. There’s something mischievous about the way McBride lets the samples weave in and out, almost teasing the listener. It’s hard not to grin while listening—it’s playful yet dark, like a prank pulled off with style. While the other two tracks, including the original mix of "STOP" and "Egocide," hold their own weight, these first two tracks steal the show. They encapsulate what makes this EP special: its refusal to conform, its DIY ethos, and its ability to transport you straight to a dingy club where everyone’s lost themselves in the music. Reflecting on Stop EP, it strikes me as more than just another acid techno release. It’s a snapshot of a time when electronic music wasn’t so concerned with being sleek or marketable. Listening to it now feels like finding an old flyer tucked inside a record sleeve—a reminder of simpler days when dancing was rebellion, and DJs were mad scientists patching together sounds in dimly lit rooms. Honestly, I didn’t expect to still be thinking about “Who’s The Long Hair?” hours later, but here we are. Maybe there really is something magical about long hair after all.
