Album Review: The Search Engine Expanded Extended by DJ Food Alright, let’s talk about The Search Engine Expanded Extended by DJ Food. This is one of those albums that feels like it’s been beamed straight from some alternate dimension where breakbeat and downtempo reign supreme. Released in 2012 on Ninja Tune (you know, the label that always seems to have its finger on the pulse), this UK-born gem dives deep into abstract, experimental vibes with a side of leftfield weirdness. It's not just an album—it’s more like an audio maze you wander through, finding surprises at every turn. First off, the tracklist is kinda wild. There are 17 tracks here, but it doesn’t feel overstuffed or messy. Instead, it flows like a mixtape made by someone who really gets how to keep things interesting without losing the plot. Two tracks stuck out for me personally: “Sentinel (Shadow Guard)” and “GIANT (Full Length Version).” “Sentinel (Shadow Guard)” kicks things off with this eerie, cinematic vibe. You can almost picture yourself sneaking around a dystopian cityscape while listening to it. The beats hit hard enough to make your head nod, but there’s also this atmospheric layer that keeps you guessing. Like, what’s lurking around the corner? Is it robots? Aliens? Your ex? Who knows! But damn, does it set the tone perfectly. Then there’s “GIANT (Full Length Version),” which hits different. This one’s got this chunky, broken-beat groove that feels both mechanical and organic at the same time. It’s like watching gears grind together but somehow still sounding smooth as hell. There’s a moment midway where everything drops out except for these glitchy little sounds—man, I must’ve rewound that part like five times because it was so satisfying. Feels like DJ Food is playing tricks on your ears, but in the best way possible. What makes this album stand out isn’t just the music itself—it’s the journey. Tracks like “Extract From Stolen Moments” and “Intermission: A New Language” add these interlude-y bits that feel like breathing room, giving you space to process all the madness before diving back in. And then you’ve got bangers like “All Covered In Darkness (Pts. 1 & 2)” closing things out with this brooding intensity that leaves you feeling… well, kinda haunted, honestly. Here’s the thing though—this album isn’t for everyone. If you’re looking for something straightforward or predictable, you might bounce off it pretty quick. But if you dig stuff that challenges you, that makes you lean in and go “wait, what did I just hear?” then yeah, this could easily become a favorite. Final thought: Listening to The Search Engine Expanded Extended feels like flipping through a sketchbook full of half-finished ideas, scribbles, and masterpieces all jumbled together. It’s messy, ambitious, and kinda genius. Oh, and fun fact—I listened to this whole thing during a thunderstorm once, and holy crap, it elevated the experience to another level. Maybe try that yourself. Or don’t. Either way, props to DJ Food for making something this bold and unapologetically strange.
