Donald Byrd Seven - Live At The Jazz Workshop Boston

Live At The Jazz Workshop Boston by Donald Byrd Seven: A Soulful Ride Through Hard Bop and Beyond Alright, let’s talk about Live At The Jazz Workshop Boston by Donald Byrd Seven. Released in 2016 under the Italian label Sinner Lady Gloria, this album is a gem for anyone who digs Hard Bop and Soul-Jazz. It’s not your typical studio record—this one’s got that live energy, recorded with a killer lineup of musicians who clearly know how to vibe together. And honestly? It feels like hanging out at a smoky jazz club on a Friday night, drink in hand. The album kicks off strong, but two tracks really stuck with me: “Flight Time” and “Kwame Part I.” Let me break it down for ya. “Flight Time” has this groovy momentum that just pulls you in. From the first note, Keith Kilgo’s drums set the pace, tight but loose enough to give everyone room to breathe. Then Donald Byrd comes in with his trumpet—it’s smooth as butter, man. You can tell he’s not just playing notes; he’s telling a story. Alan Barnes adds some flute magic later on, which gives the track this dreamy, almost cinematic feel. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to close your eyes and sway, even if you’re just sitting in your living room. Then there’s “Kwame Part I,” which feels like stepping into another world entirely. Right from the start, Kevin Toney’s piano lays down this rich, soulful foundation, and when Bernard Perry’s guitar joins in, things get downright hypnotic. There’s something about the way these guys layer their sounds—it’s intricate but never overdone. And Ray Armando’s congas? They add this subtle spice that keeps the rhythm alive without hogging the spotlight. This track feels like a journey, like you’re being led somewhere mysterious and beautiful all at once. What’s wild about this album is how well everything flows together. David Williams on bass holds it all down with this steady pulse, while each musician gets their moment to shine. It’s clear they weren’t just phoning it in—they were feeling it. Even though it was released in 2016, the recording has this timeless quality, like it could’ve been made decades ago or yesterday. That’s the power of live jazz, I guess. Here’s the thing: listening to Live At The Jazz Workshop Boston reminded me why I fell in love with jazz in the first place. It’s raw, it’s real, and it doesn’t try too hard to impress you. Instead, it invites you in, lets you sit back, and enjoy the ride. Honestly, after spinning this album a few times, I found myself googling flights to Boston just to see if the Jazz Workshop was still around (spoiler: it’s not). But hey, maybe that’s what good music does—it plants little seeds of wanderlust in your brain. So yeah, if you’re into jazz—or even if you’re just curious—give this one a shot. Just don’t blame me if you end up daydreaming about smoky clubs and late-night jam sessions afterward.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know? The album *Live At The Jazz Workshop Boston* by Donald Byrd Seven wasn’t actually recorded in Boston. Despite its name, it was released in Italy in 2016 on the label Sinner Lady Gloria. It’s a hidden gem blending Hard Bop and Soul-Jazz styles. The tracks feature killer performances, like Alan Barnes switching between saxophone and flute, and Donald Byrd’s sharp trumpet leading the way. My personal favorite? "Kwame Part I" — it’s got this raw energy that feels alive, even decades later.

very sublime. songs like these conjure up a very period piece in my heart. when I hear late jazz like this the Montage of old yellow taxis of the 70s and 80s cruising around NYC comes to mind only because that's how I envision this song would come through on the radio as the cabbie goes around looking for fairs to pick up. great old times blissfully uninhibited by the struggles of modern era.

For the avoidance of confusion, this recording features saxophonist Allan Barnes (USA), not saxophonist Alan Barnes (UK)

Absolutely Mammoth tune imho.
Also, check out the same vibe on Ayers' 'Tear to a Smile'.
