Eyedea & Abilities - By The Throat

Review by Florian Reisinger

By The Throat: Eyedea & Abilities Take You on a Wild Ride Through Conscious Hip-Hop Eyedea & Abilities’ By The Throat isn’t just an album—it’s like being handed a kaleidoscope that somehow sees into your soul. Released in 2009 under Rhymesayers Entertainment, this record blends hip-hop, rap, and rock with a sharp dose of consciousness that punches harder than most albums out there. It's raw, layered, and messy in all the right ways—like life itself. Let’s talk about "Sky Diver" first because holy crap, does it stick. The track opens with these glitchy keyboard sounds that feel like you’re falling through space, but then Eyedea comes in with his rapid-fire flow, spitting lines so vivid they practically paint pictures in your brain. He doesn’t just rap—he rants, he reflects, he wrestles with existential dread while DJ Abilities lays down this hypnotic beat behind him. And let’s not forget the guitar work (yeah, Eyedea plays guitar too). That little riff looping throughout? It’s haunting, man. Like hearing echoes of something beautiful you can never quite reach. Then there’s "Smile," which flips the vibe entirely. This one feels warmer, almost nostalgic, until you really listen to the lyrics. Eyedea’s wordplay here is next-level clever—he slips between humor and heartbreak without missing a beat. There’s this moment where he says, “I don’t wanna die alone,” and suddenly the whole song shifts gears emotionally. You realize he’s not just talking about smiling for show; he’s wrestling with loneliness, fear, and maybe even hope. Plus, DJ Abilities’ turntable scratches add this gritty texture that makes the whole thing feel alive. What sticks with me about By The Throat is how unapologetically human it feels. These guys aren’t trying to be perfect or polished—they’re just laying it all out there, warts and all. From Eyedea’s multi-instrumental wizardry to DJ Abilities’ tight production, every track has its own personality, its own heartbeat. Even the artwork by Michael Gaughan and Siddiq matches the chaotic energy of the music—like a visual representation of what happens when you let go and scream into the void. But here’s the kicker: listening to this album feels like therapy. Not the kind where someone tells you everything will be okay, but the kind where you sit in the messiness of your thoughts and figure out why they hurt so much. By the end, you might not have answers, but at least you’ve got some killer tunes to keep you company. And honestly? If Eyedea were still around today, I’d love to ask him if he knew how deeply this album would burrow into people’s minds. Or maybe I wouldn’t say anything at all. Maybe I’d just nod, smile, and press play again. Because sometimes music speaks louder than words ever could.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know? The 2009 album *By The Throat* by Eyedea & Abilities is a genre-blending masterpiece that showcases the duo's versatility. Not only did Eyedea handle vocals and lyrics, but he also played guitar, keyboards, percussion, and even drum programming on multiple tracks. Meanwhile, DJ Abilities flexed his skills on turntables, bass, and co-production. It’s like a DIY symphony of Hip-Hop, Rock, and Conscious Rap all rolled into one. Pretty wild for an album released under Rhymesayers Entertainment, huh?

I have lost 30 some odd compatriots to the narcowarfare being waged by a faceless entity void of any soul; I have not attended a single funeral due to my own horrendous feelings of survivors guilt but every time I hear eyedea; I see their faces; I imagine a world where the narrative they all wove so intricately likes spiders web continued to unravel; instead of dissolving to the annals of time:
They took the dive.

i just recently discovered his music. im blown away. so sad he passed away, that he didn‘t win the fight against his demons. his lyrics are on another level, so thoughtful, poetic and reflective. gone way too soon.

Its so strange seeing my comment from 10 years ago. I've listened to this song a million times but it's the first time I've come back to this one. Eyedea is timeless. Enjoy your peace my friend and keep on smiling.

"Time taught me how to see every second as heaven, even though they're perfectly disguised as hell..."

What more needs to be said? This man was brilliant and troubled. I wish he had survived the world and himself.

The world would be better if he had. Yet he gave enough either way.

As the years go by, I get more and more emotional listening to all of his music. We should all enjoy what he’s done and celebrate how beautiful his art is. RIP

"
A prince in practice moans for the attention that he wants
But most of this town won't even
Dignify his ignorance with a response
Left to a crowded foster home by a 15-year-old mom
Never been held in anyone's arms
When you've never been moved it's really hard to move on
A young saleswoman sets up shop when the sun sets
She'll make your wildest dreams come true
At a price you won't forget
The sadly-married set up alibis: no harm, no regret
Hoping they meet an angel in bed
That could wrestle the devil right out of their heads
This city runs fast, no one has time to sit with themselves
No time to look into our pain
Or see the same despair in everyone else
It's here, it's there, it's everywhere
Tears soak each card the dealers dealt
But time taught me how to see every second as Heaven
Even though they're perfectly disguised as Hell
And I refuse to let past bruises cover the light
It ain't all good, but it's all good enough, so I know I'm alright
Agony is truth, it's our connection to the living
I accept it as perfection and keep on existing in the now

I can only build if I tear the walls down
Even if it breaks me, I won't let it make me frown
I'm falling, but no matter how hard I hit the ground
... I'll still smile
I can only build if I tear the walls down
Even if it breaks me, I won't let it make me frown
I'm falling, but no matter how hard I hit the ground
... I'll still smile

Ear-to-ear, as if that's all I'm here for
Despite the wars founded by the rich, funded by the poor
Kids barely 18 are dying so billionaires can make more
Elsewhere hungry mothers watch their babies starve to death
In a beat-up shack on a dirt floor
The aged professor quotes, "Freedom's without a path."
Now he dresses like a widow
And preaches "Love is dead" in every class
But curiosity killed the cat and taught the dog in him how to act
And it burned his bridge to Jill
So he tries to drown the guilt with a bottle of Jack
Self-proclaimed rebels say, "We must oppose the system!"
"You gotta take a stand; if you're not against 'em, you're with 'em!"
Signs read: "Support the troops!"
"Bring 'em home!" "No more innocent victims!"
But when a homeless veteran asks for spare change
You're too busy protesting to even listen
And I'm no different, I live in conflict and contradiction
But it can be so beautiful when I don't reject what lies within
It's beautiful the way agony connects us to the living
I think of the world when I hurt and keep on existing in the now

I can only build if I tear the walls down
Even if it breaks me, I won't let it make me frown
I'm falling, but no matter how hard I hit the ground
... I'll still smile
I can only build if I tear the walls down
Even if it breaks me, I won't let it make me frown
I'm falling, but no matter how hard I hit the ground
... I'll still smile"
