Things Are Changing by Freddi Henchi & The Soulsetters: A Funky Ride Worth Taking If you’re a fan of that raw, unfiltered funk and soul vibe, Things Are Changing by Freddi Henchi & The Soulsetters might just be the album to shake up your playlist. Released under Patheway Records in the US, this record doesn’t try too hard to reinvent the wheel—it’s more about grooves that stick and lyrics that make you think. With James Carmichael handling the arrangements, it’s got that polished-but-still-gritty feel that keeps things interesting. Let’s talk tracks. First up is the title track, “Things Are Changing.” It’s one of those songs where the bassline grabs you right away—deep, punchy, and impossible not to nod your head to. The horns come in like they own the place, and Freddi’s vocals? Smooth but with an edge, like he’s seen some stuff and wants you to know it. What makes this track memorable isn’t just its infectious rhythm; it’s how it feels like a statement. Whether intentional or not, there’s something timeless about its message. Things are always changing, aren’t they? And somehow, this song captures both hope and uncertainty without saying too much. That’s rare. Then there’s “He’s a Real Good Cop,” which stands out for completely different reasons. This one has a playful swagger to it, almost like it’s poking fun at itself while still delivering killer hooks. The guitar licks are sharp, and the backing vocals add this layer of sass that makes you grin. You can tell the band had fun recording this one—it’s loose but tight, if that makes sense. Plus, who wouldn’t remember a song with such a quirky premise? It’s funky storytelling at its finest. The production quality leans more vintage than modern, which works perfectly for this kind of music. Sure, it could use a bit more polish here and there, but honestly, that rough-around-the-edges charm is part of what makes it work. It feels authentic, like these guys were jamming live in the studio instead of overthinking every note. By the time the last track fades out, you’re left with this weird mix of nostalgia and curiosity. Like, did we really need another funk album in 2023? Maybe not. But now that it’s here, I’m kinda glad it exists. Because let’s face it—there’s never enough good funk in the world. Oh, and here’s the kicker: listening to this album made me realize my cat actually digs funk music. Who knew?

It was Marvin "Henchi" Graves that passed away in June of 2009. Freddi is very much alive and well. Too many people that do not really know the band believe "Freddi Henchi" was one person. Not so.

Wow! Thanks for sharing, I can't believe I ran into this one...Like HicksBoy, I used to go to Skunk Creek Inn EVERY friday night (drown-nite) with a VW bus full of friends from Denver. Freddie & Henchi really got the whole place jumping. Great show, sound, & use of strobes. It was also a 3.2 beer bar that served to 18 yrs. & up...you can just imagine. I downloaded their only song I could find from i-tunes "Funky to the Bone" which is a great funk tune.

I lived with Henchi and Fred In Boulder, CO in 1975 into 1976. Two of the nicest, generous, funny and fun-lovin guys of the 70's. Soryy to hear of Henchi's passing but delighted that Fred is still around and performing. Fond memories.

So cool!! For some reason I decided to see if there was anything on these guys and I was amazed to find something. I too was a Skunk Creek Inn fanatic. I wound up dating the drummer, Eppie, for awhile. I really loved this band. What memories this brings back. Thanks!!!
