Album Review: Funny – Funny Alright, let’s talk about Funny, the self-titled debut from the band Funny. Released in 1992, this album is like a weird musical cocktail—rock and hip-hop vibes shaken up with glam, hard rock, and nu-metal flavors. It’s wild how it came out in both the US and Czechoslovakia (yeah, that place still existed back then). The record was put out by Chunky Azz Records and Gramofonové Závody, which sounds like some kind of factory for old-school vinyl lovers. The credits are packed with names you won’t forget easily. Like Nikki Joy M., who basically owned the cover, layout, and design. Or Shawn Hackel, who engineered and mixed the whole thing. And hey, props to Jeff Tedrick on vocals—he’s got this gritty charm that fits perfectly with the chaos of the music. Oh, and V. Vlasák on bass guitar? Dude brings some serious groove to tracks like “Sám Proti Všem” and “This Life.” Now, onto the songs. There are a lot of them—seriously, this album doesn’t mess around—but I gotta shout out two that stuck with me. First up, “Lipstick.” This one hits different. It’s got this swaggering glam-rock vibe with these punchy guitar riffs courtesy of Joey and Mouse. The lyrics feel kinda sleazy but fun, like they’re poking fun at superficial relationships or something. You can almost picture someone smearing lipstick while blasting this track in their bedroom mirror. Honestly, it’s catchy as hell, even if it makes you feel a little guilty for liking it so much. Then there’s “Cowboy.” Man, this song feels like stepping into a spaghetti western movie where everyone’s wearing leather jackets instead of cowboy hats. The drums from Jim Sayers are insane here—they drive the whole thing forward like a runaway horse. And when Jeff starts singing, it’s like he’s telling you a story about being rebellious and free. There’s just something raw about it that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. Plus, the mix of English and Czech lyrics gives it an edge you don’t hear every day. What’s wild about Funny is how it blends genres without overthinking it. One moment you’re headbanging to heavy riffs, and the next you’re nodding along to hip-hop beats. Tracks like “Hej, Vole Počkej” and “Ráda To Má” show off the band’s versatility, bouncing between energetic anthems and slower, moodier pieces. But honestly, what really makes this album stand out isn’t just the music—it’s the vibe. Listening to Funny feels like crashing a party where no one cares if you belong. It’s messy, loud, and unapologetically itself. Here’s the kicker though: Funny never blew up the way they could’ve. Maybe it was the timing, maybe it was the fact that they were trying to conquer two totally different countries at once. Either way, it’s kinda sad because albums like this deserve more love. So yeah, if you stumble across Funny, give it a spin. Just don’t blame me if you end up humming “Lipstick” for days. Oh, and one last thing—how cool is it that Daniela Antalovská and Jiří Antalovský handled photography? Feels like the whole project was a family affair. Weirdly wholesome, right?
