glass beach - the first glass beach album

Glass Beach – The First Glass Beach Album: A Genre-Bending Chaos You’ll Want to Dive Into If you’re the kind of person who likes their music served up with a side of “what the heck did I just listen to?” then The First Glass Beach Album by Glass Beach is basically your new favorite thing. Released in 2020 (yeah, that year we all want to forget but can’t), this indie rock/pop/rock/jazz/electronic/chiptune smorgasbord comes at you like someone threw a bunch of genres into a blender and hit “puree.” And somehow? It works. Let’s start with the tracklist—because holy cow, there are so many versions of the same songs it feels like they couldn’t decide which one was better. Like, do we really need three different versions of “Soft!!!!!!” or “Yoshi’s Island”? Apparently yes, because each version has its own little twist, and honestly, it kinda keeps things fresh. But let’s zoom in on two tracks that stuck with me like gum under a shoe. First up: “Bone Skull.” This song hits you over the head right outta the gate—it’s loud, chaotic, and sounds like an emo kid got into a fight with a drum machine. The vocals bounce between raw screams and melodic croons, and the whole thing feels like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube while riding a rollercoaster. By the time it ends, you’re not sure if you loved it or hated it, but you definitely remember it. That’s the magic of Glass Beach—they make music that sticks to your brain like glitter glue. Then there’s “Neon Glow,” which is probably my go-to chill-but-not-really track from the album. It starts off all moody and atmospheric, like walking through a foggy street lit by neon signs, but then BAM—it flips into this upbeat, almost poppy groove that makes you wanna dance awkwardly in your bedroom. The lyrics are cryptic enough to feel deep without being pretentious, and the layered synths give it this retro-futuristic vibe that’s hard to pin down. Basically, it’s the musical equivalent of wearing a leather jacket covered in patches—you don’t know what it means, but dang, does it look cool? What’s wild about this album is how it refuses to sit still. One minute you’re vibing to some emo-infused alt-rock, and the next you’re listening to something that could’ve been ripped straight out of a Sega Genesis soundtrack (cough “Yoshi’s Island” cough). It’s messy, it’s experimental, and yeah, sometimes it feels like it might fall apart—but isn’t that what makes it fun? And hey, props to Run For Cover Records for putting this out into the world. Because seriously, who else would greenlight an album that sounds like a mixtape made by a hyperactive teenager with ADHD? No shade—that’s exactly why it works. So here’s the deal: If you’re looking for something polished and predictable, keep scrolling. But if you’re ready to embrace the chaos of a band that clearly doesn’t care about sticking to one lane, The First Glass Beach Album is worth every weird, wonderful second. Just don’t blame me when you find yourself humming “Soft!!!!!!” for the hundredth time today. Oh, and P.S.—I still have no idea what “Classic J Dies and Goes to Hell Part 1” is about. Maybe Part 2 will explain it? Or maybe they just wanted to troll us. Either way, I’m here for it.

[lyrics]

Yeah I know
Know what you're thinking
It seems like I
Just can't stop making
Everything about myself
Time goes by
And nothing's changing
But I stay here
And I stay waiting
All the time
I'm out of my mind
And I tell you I'll be better
But I can't guarantee it
'Cause when you say that you think I'm perfect
I really just can't see it
When I'm standing in the bathroom
And I'm crying in the mirror
'Cause I just can't stop wondering
How could I get so soft?

(Who’s else can relate to these lyrics lol)

The experimental tracks on this album are incredibly underrated imo, I'm looking forward to their next album where J said there's going to be more experimental tracks
