Other Forms EP by Hidden Element, Physical Illusion & Dexta: A Wild Ride Through Jungle Beats Let’s cut to the chase—Other Forms EP is one of those hidden gems that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Released in 2015 via Translation Recordings (shoutout to the label for keeping this fire alive), this little beast from Hidden Element, with some help from Physical Illusion and Dexta, hits hard where it counts. It’s an electronic odyssey into Drum n Bass and Jungle vibes, with just enough grit and groove to keep your head nodding and feet moving. And yeah, coming outta the USA and Canada ain’t nothing to sleep on either. Now, I gotta say, not every track slapped me across the face—but two really stuck. The first? "Hidden Element - Don’t Follow." Man, this tune feels like a warning wrapped in basslines. Like…you know something big’s about to go down, but instead of running away, you wanna lean in closer. That beat—it’s got teeth. Every time I hear it, I feel like I’m walking through foggy streets at night, heart pounding, unsure if I’m being chased or doing the chasing. It’s haunting as hell, but also kinda freeing? Weird combo, but it works. Then there’s "Hidden Element - Hot Pants (Dexta’s Jungle Remix)." Oh man, THIS ONE. If “Don’t Follow” pulls you into the shadows, this remix throws you straight into the jungle—literally. The rhythm is wild, untamed, like vines wrapping around your ankles while you try to dance. You can tell Dexta knew exactly what they were doing here; it’s playful yet raw, chaotic yet controlled. There’s this moment halfway through where everything drops out except for these crisp hi-hats and a bassline so thick you could spread it on toast. Honestly? It makes me wanna grab my sneakers and run laps around the block. No joke. The rest of the EP has its moments too—"Understanding" is smooth and moody, perfect for zoning out late at night—and sure, maybe “Faster, But Slower” sounds like someone tried to name a paradox, but hey, it still bangs. Still, those two tracks are the ones I’ll remember long after the playlist ends. What gets me thinking, though, is how albums like this fly under the radar. In 2015, everyone was busy losing their minds over EDM festivals and pop crossovers, but here we had artists experimenting with real texture and depth. Maybe that’s why Other Forms EP resonates so much—it doesn’t scream for attention. It whispers, then smacks you upside the head when you’re not looking. So, yeah. This EP might not change your life, but it’ll definitely change your mood. Or at least give you something fresh to vibe to when you’re stuck in traffic or avoiding small talk at parties. Just don’t blame me if you start hearing jungle beats in your dreams.

Notes

  • Hidden Element return to Translation with the ‘Other Forms’ EP, continuing their exploration of sounds across the ever-expanding universe of bass music with a collection tracks that demonstrate their versatility as musicians, unconstrained by tempo or genre.
  • On ‘Faster But Slower’ rising pads set the stage for an evocative, lovelorn affair with gently plucked guitars, lush synth leads, and glitchy 808 drum edits. Next, Hidden Element set speed to 140 BPM and journey to the deep field of space on ‘Don’t Follow Them,’ whose surging mid-bass cuts across sparse, electro-acoustic soundscapes and pumping sub frequencies. ‘Understanding,’ a collaboration with fellow Ukrainian artist Physical Illusion (Fokuz Recordings), maintains the deep, celestial vibe, as industrial-sounding drums ‘click’ and ‘whir’ in juxtaposition with subtle synth textures, conjuring images of a research satellite surveying the great abyss of space. The aptly-titled ‘Heartbreak Tune’ brings things back to a more terrestrial 160 BPM two-step shuffle and groove, interweaving guitar riffs, twinkling keys, and orchestral strings. Last but not least, Dexta (Different Music) twists things up with a modern jungle edit of ‘Hot Pants’ from the ‘Lifeforms’ EP , where cascading Amen breaks and punching subs thud and rumble, delivering pure bass-weight.
  • From cinematic deep space soundscapes to rolling dancefloor mayhem, Hidden Element’s ‘Other Forms’ EP is something to be enjoyed in all listening environments. The Ukranian duo deftly incorporate traditional instruments like guitar and piano into their compositions, but freely experiment with the union of organic and electronic sounds for an evocative and immersive release from start to finish.
