Album Review: Fotspor by Holm CPU – A Nu-Disco Odyssey from Norway Released in 2016 under the Olsen label, Fotspor by Holm CPU is a vibrant collision of pop sensibilities and electronic experimentation, steeped in disco nostalgia. The album, crafted almost entirely by Frode Holm—a multi-instrumentalist with a penchant for vintage synths—feels like stepping into a retro-futuristic dream. With contributions from Nissa Nyberget’s lush backing vocals, Vidar Johansen’s baritone saxophone growls, and Fred Nøddelund’s trumpet flares, it’s clear that this project was built on collaboration but driven by one man’s vision. The genres here are Pop and Electronic, but the real magic lies in its styles: Disco and Nu-Disco. If you’re into slick grooves, shimmering keys, and an overall vibe that screams “dance floor,” then this album might just be your jam. Let’s zoom in on two standout tracks to see why they stick. First up is “Fotspor (Todd Terje Disco Dub)”. This remix is pure gold—an irresistible blend of Todd Terje’s signature playful production style and Holm’s original composition. The track opens with a hypnotic bassline courtesy of Tom-Erik Antonsen, layered over crisp drums by Tor Bendiksen. But what really makes this version unforgettable is how it lets the Jupiter 8 and Rhodes keyboards take center stage, creating a soundscape that feels both futuristic and nostalgic. It’s the kind of song that sneaks up on you; before you know it, you’ve listened to it three times in a row. You can’t help but move. Honestly, I’d bet money this remix would light up any late-night party or chill afternoon playlist. Then there’s “Fotspor (Björn Torske Remix)”, which takes things in a slightly different direction. Björn Torske brings his trademark minimalistic approach, stripping back some of the layers to focus on rhythm and texture. Here, the percussion work by Svein Christiansen and Svein Hansen shines through, adding subtle complexity without overwhelming the mix. What stands out most is Atle Bakken’s soloist flair—it adds an unexpected emotional depth to the track. While not as immediately catchy as the Todd Terje version, this remix rewards repeated listens, revealing new details each time. One thing worth noting about Fotspor is its artwork, designed by Bendik Kaltenborn. It perfectly complements the music—a quirky, colorful visual representation of the sonic journey within. And let’s give props to the liner notes too; seeing all those credits listed makes you appreciate the effort behind every note, every beat, every flourish. Reflecting on Fotspor, it strikes me as more than just another Nu-Disco release. Sure, it ticks all the boxes for fans of the genre, but it also feels deeply personal. Frode Holm poured so much of himself into this record—from writing and producing to playing nearly every keyboard imaginable—that it becomes hard not to feel connected to it. That said, if I had one gripe, it’d be that the remixes overshadow the original track a bit. Don’t get me wrong—they’re fantastic—but hearing the unadulterated “Fotspor” could’ve been even cooler. In the end, though, isn’t it kinda wild how something made in Norway in 2016 manages to sound like it came straight outta Studio 54? Guess great music really doesn’t care about time or place.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The album *Fotspor* by Holm CPU is like a one-person powerhouse. Frode Holm, the mastermind behind it, didn’t just write and produce the whole thing—he also played nearly every keyboard you can think of, from a Rhodes to a Minimoog. And get this: he even roped in remixes from Todd Terje and Björn Torske, two legends in the Norwegian electronic scene. It’s like a disco dream team. Add in some killer artwork by Bendik Kaltenborn, and you’ve got an album that feels distinctly Norwegian but with a retro-global vibe. Pretty cool, right?
