Review by Thomas Tribby

Paganini Concerto No.1 In D / Carmen Fantasy / Zigeunerweisen: Itzhak Perlman Shreds, Big Time Alright, let’s get this straight—this album is a monster. Released in 1987 under His Master's Voice (Germany), it’s one of those records that doesn’t just sit there collecting dust; it demands your attention. You got Itzhak Perlman on violin doing his thing with two legendary conductors, André Previn and Lawrence Foster, plus some serious backup from The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. If you’re into classical music but haven’t heard this yet, what are you even doing? Seriously. Now, I’m not gonna lie—the whole record slaps, but if I had to pick tracks that stick out like sore thumbs, it’d be "Zigeunerweisen, Op. 20 No. 1" and "Carmen-Fantasy, Op. 25." Let me break it down for ya. First up, "Zigeunerweisen." Holy crap, does Perlman rip through this piece like it owes him money. This track has everything: drama, flair, and enough technical wizardry to make lesser musicians cry themselves to sleep. The way he handles Sarasate’s insane runs and double stops? Unreal. Every note feels alive, like it’s clawing its way out of the speakers and punching you right in the soul. And don’t even get me started on how tight The Royal Philharmonic sounds behind him—they’re locked in so hard they might as well be glued together. By the time the final notes hit, you’ll either wanna scream or bow down. Maybe both. Then there’s "Carmen-Fantasy," which is basically Perlman showing off again—but who cares when it sounds THIS good? Based on Bizet’s opera Carmen, this thing takes all the juiciest bits and cranks them up to eleven. From the fiery opening to the lush, romantic middle section, Perlman makes every second count. There’s this moment near the end where the tempo kicks into overdrive, and suddenly you realize you’ve been holding your breath because holy hell, how does anyone play THAT fast without their fingers falling off?! Conductor Lawrence Foster deserves props too—he keeps the orchestra tight as nails while letting Perlman shine like the supernova he is. Look, I could ramble about the other tracks ("Violin Concerto No.1 In D"? Killer. “Rondo (Allegro Spiritoso)”? A banger.), but honestly, these two alone justify owning this album. Michael Gray and Robert Gooch nailed the engineering—it’s crisp, clear, and packs a punch. Even the cover photo by Christian Steiner screams class, though I kinda wish they’d thrown in a pic of Perlman mid-performance looking sweaty and wild-eyed. Woulda fit the vibe perfectly. So yeah, here’s the kicker: listening to this album made me wonder why people bother playing video games when they could just blast this stuff instead. Imagine boss battles backed by "Zigeunerweisen"—instant epicness. Or speedrunning levels with "Carmen-Fantasy" blasting in your ears. Who needs pixels when you’ve got Perlman shredding like a maniac? Final verdict? Buy it. Stream it. Worship it. Just don’t ignore it unless you hate joy and talent.
