Identity by Keith Tippett: A Wild Ride Through Jazz and Beyond If you’re looking for an album that feels like your brain’s been hijacked by a rogue jazz collective, Identity by Keith Tippett is the ticket. Released under the Not On Label banner (because, of course it’s not on a label—this isn’t your grandma’s smooth jazz), this double-disc extravaganza blends Contemporary Jazz, Free Improvisation, Prog Rock, and enough Avant-garde weirdness to make even the most adventurous listener raise an eyebrow. Recorded in Japan, it’s got all the chaotic charm of a Tokyo street market but with fewer octopus balls. Let’s dive into two tracks that’ll stick to your memory like gum on a hot sidewalk: “First Weaving” and “Improvisation.” “First Weaving” kicks things off like someone dropped a piano down a flight of stairs—but in the best way possible. Keith Tippett’s grand piano work here is both delicate and ferocious, as if he can’t decide whether he wants to soothe you or scare you witless. Meanwhile, the saxophones wail like cats fighting over the last bit of tuna, and Paul Dunmall’s bagpipes? Let’s just say they add a layer of WTF that somehow works. The whole thing feels like a musical Rube Goldberg machine where every piece clicks into place just before collapsing spectacularly. Then there’s “Improvisation,” which is exactly what it sounds like—a free-for-all jam session that makes you wonder if anyone involved actually rehearsed beforehand. Tony Levin’s drumming provides some semblance of structure while everyone else goes bananas around him. It’s messy, unpredictable, and utterly thrilling—like watching a live-action version of those improv comedy shows where no one knows what’s happening next. You might not walk away humming any melodies, but you’ll definitely remember how alive it feels. The credits read like a who’s who of experimental music legends—from Elton Dean’s alto sax wizardry to Julie Tippetts’ haunting vocals—but don’t expect anything resembling traditional rock or jazz tunes. This is music for people who think rules are more like suggestions. And honestly? That’s kind of refreshing. So why does Identity matter? Because it reminds us that music doesn’t always have to be polished or predictable to be meaningful. Sometimes, it just needs to exist—to push boundaries, challenge expectations, and leave you scratching your head while grinning like an idiot. Sure, it’s not gonna replace your morning coffee playlist, but hey, life’s too short for boring music. And now for the unexpected remark: If Keith Tippett were a chef, his dishes would come plated with half-eaten utensils and instructions to assemble them yourself. Bon appétit.
