Weltschmertz – Weltschmertz (1982): A Retro-Futuristic Gem That Still Hits Weirdly Right Alright, let’s talk about this wild ride of an album. Released in 1982, Weltschmertz by Weltschmertz is one of those records that feels like it came from another dimension but somehow landed smack dab in the middle of Germany and Italy. With its mix of rock, electronic, and pop vibes—plus dashes of synth-pop, minimalism, avant-garde weirdness, and new wave—it's not your average listen. And honestly? That’s what makes it so damn fun. First off, can we just appreciate how many people were involved here? You’ve got Xaver Aahorn doing vocals AND drums (multitasking king), Barbara Schewe holding down the basslines, and Clemens Clemenzone rocking both guitar and synths like some kind of musical Swiss Army knife. Oh, and Grete “Wally” Penroth on artwork duties—her cover design looks like something you’d find in a thrift store time capsule. It all adds up to this quirky little package that screams early ‘80s DIY energy. Now, onto the tracks. I gotta shout out two songs that stuck with me because they’re just... memorable for different reasons. Track 1: "Gala Der Stars" This track kicks things off with this super dramatic intro—you know, the kind where you feel like you're walking into a neon-lit spaceship party. The synths are lush and dreamy, while the drum machine has this stiff, almost robotic groove that kinda reminds me of Kraftwerk if they decided to throw a disco night. What really gets me though is the vibe. It’s over-the-top theatrical without taking itself too seriously. Like, yeah, there’s definitely a guy wearing silver pants singing about celebrities or whatever, but who cares? It’s catchy as hell and sets the tone perfectly for the rest of the album. Track 7: "Modenschau" Okay, so this one hits different. Imagine being at a fashion show in some dystopian future where everyone’s dressed in chrome jumpsuits and mood rings. That’s “Modenschau” for ya. The beat is sleek and mechanical, and the vocals have this detached coolness to them, like they’re narrating the end of humanity through haute couture. There’s also this moment around the halfway point where everything drops out except for these eerie synth chords—it gives me chills every time. Honestly, I think this song would fit right in on a playlist next to Depeche Mode or even modern darkwave bands. It’s haunting, stylish, and totally unforgettable. So yeah, Weltschmertz isn’t perfect. Some tracks drag a bit, and the production has that lo-fi charm that might not appeal to everyone. But man, does it have personality. This album doesn’t try to be anything other than what it is—a bold experiment in blending genres and styles before anyone really knew what the heck they were doing. It’s raw, unpolished, and refreshingly human. Here’s the kicker though: listening to this record now, in 2023, feels oddly relevant. All the talk about technology (“Mein Freund Der Computer”), existential dread (“Sehnsucht Aus Beton”), and escapism (“Komm In Meine Zeitmaschine”) could easily slide into today’s playlists. Maybe Weltschmertz was ahead of their time—or maybe we’re just catching up to their weird little world. Either way, it’s worth a spin if you dig music that sounds like it fell out of a time machine. Final thought? If aliens ever invade Earth, I hope they bring this album back home with them. They’d probably think we’re cooler than we actually are.
