Review by David Steel

Funky Soul 1 by James Brown and The Famous Flames: A Timeless Groove That Still Hits Alright, let’s talk about Funky Soul 1, the iconic 1967 album from James Brown and The Famous Flames. If you’re into raw, unfiltered soul with a side of funk that makes your feet move before your brain catches up, this one’s for you. Straight outta the US on King Records, it's got that classic James Brown stamp all over it—because, well, he produced it himself. And when you’ve got JB in charge? You know it’s gonna slap. The album kicks off with “Funky Soul 1,” which is basically an anthem for anyone who loves gritty grooves. It’s not just music; it’s a vibe. The rhythm hits so hard that I swear my dog started dancing the first time I played it (okay, maybe he was just confused). What sticks with me here is how tight the band is—they lock into that pocket like they were born to play together. Plus, James’ energy? Insane. He doesn’t just sing or shout—he commands every second of the track like he owns the airwaves themselves. Then there’s “The Soul Of J.B.,” which feels like peeking inside James Brown’s musical soul—if his soul had its own soundtrack, this would be it. This instrumental jam gives the band room to stretch out, showing off their chops without needing words to do the talking. It’s smooth but still packs a punch, kinda like sipping coffee while running late—you feel relaxed, but there’s urgency underneath. Every horn blast and drum hit reminds me why people call him the Godfather of Soul. Dude didn’t just make songs; he made moments. Now, credit where it’s due: B. Hobgood, J. Brown, and J. Crawford wrote these gems, and man, they knew what they were doing. They crafted something timeless here—a mix of swagger and heart that still resonates today. Whether you’re spinning vinyl or streaming it digitally, this album has a way of making everything else fade into the background. Reflecting on Funky Soul 1, it strikes me how ahead of its time it really was. Sure, we think of 1967 as the era of flower power and rock ‘n’ roll rebellion, but James Brown was busy laying down blueprints for generations of funk and soul artists to come. Honestly, listening to this record feels like finding a hidden treasure chest full of gold records. Oh, and random thought: if aliens ever visit Earth and ask for proof of human creativity, I’m handing them this album. No questions asked.

Laid back cut, a warm-up tune before the show begins. Even better is the version without the organ, called just Funky Soul. Only then can you hear the magical piano that makes the song so sweet. I had the record once and now I look and look on You Tube but can't find it anywhere, not even Soul on Top.
