Album Review: "Because Mattinata" by Jan Peerce Jan Peerce’s 1949 album Because Mattinata is a gem from the golden age of classical music, blending timeless opera with a touch of mid-century charm. Released under the Varsity label in the US, this record might not scream “blockbuster” by today’s standards, but it holds its own as a heartfelt slice of operatic history. If you're into classical music or just curious about how opera sounded back then, this one's worth a spin. The album features two tracks, and honestly, they’re both memorable for different reasons. First up is Because. Yeah, it’s short and sweet—classic Peerce through and through. His voice has this rich, velvety quality that pulls you right in. What makes Because stick in my mind? It’s simple yet so expressive. You don’t need to know Italian (or even care) to feel what he’s singing. The melody feels like an old friend; comforting but still full of surprises. Plus, there’s something about the way Peerce nails those high notes—it’s like he’s daring you not to get goosebumps. Then there’s Mattinata, which hits completely different vibes. This track feels grander, more theatrical. It opens with this sweeping energy that grabs your attention immediately. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting such a dramatic shift after Because. But hey, isn’t that what makes albums interesting? Peerce takes command here, delivering every line with precision and passion. By the end, you almost forget you’re listening to a guy born over a century ago—his voice feels alive, present, like he’s standing right there in front of you. One thing I didn’t expect? How much these tracks made me want to dig deeper into Peerce’s career. He’s got this rare ability to make classical music feel accessible without dumbing it down. Sure, some parts sound dated compared to modern recordings, but that’s part of the charm. It’s raw, unpolished, and real in ways that today’s overly produced tracks sometimes miss. In the end, Because Mattinata isn’t just another relic of 1940s America—it’s proof that great music transcends time. Listening to it feels like stepping back into a world where singers poured their souls into every note, no filters needed. And honestly? That’s kinda refreshing. Who knew two tracks could pack such a punch? Guess sometimes less really is more.
