Vincent Bell - Theme From Airport

Review by Walter Bundotich

Album Review: Theme From Airport by Vincent Bell Man, if you’re into that smooth, buttery kind of music that just floats in the air like a warm breeze on a summer day, then Theme From Airport is your jam. Released way back in 1970 (yeah, before most of us were born), this album feels like stepping into an old-school lounge where everyone’s dressed fancy but no one takes themselves too seriously. With genres spanning jazz, stage & screen, and even classical vibes, it’s got layers—like an onion, but way less tear-inducing. The big hit here? “Airport Love Theme.” Oh boy, does this track stick to you. It’s one of those tunes where you can practically picture two people running toward each other in slow motion at some glamorous airport terminal. You know, dramatic stuff. The strings swell up so perfectly, thanks to Nick Perito pulling double duty as both arranger and conductor—it’s lush without being over-the-top. And let’s not forget Gwen and Vern’s version of the same theme later in the album; it adds a little twist, almost like hearing the same story from a different perspective. It’s sweet, nostalgic, maybe even kinda cheesy—but hey, sometimes cheese is exactly what you need. Another standout for me is “Marilyn’s Theme.” There’s something haunting about it, like it knows more than it’s letting on. Maybe it’s the pacing or the way the piano lingers just a second longer than expected—it makes you feel things without needing words. Honestly, I kept replaying this track late at night when everything else was quiet. It felt...personal, y’know? Like it had its own secret world tucked inside. What really ties all these tracks together is how easy they are to listen to. This isn’t the kind of music that demands your attention—it slides right into your day, whether you’re sipping coffee or zoning out during a long drive. That’s probably why it fits under the "Easy Listening" style so well. But don’t mistake “easy” for boring. Nope, there’s depth here, especially with Tom Morgan producing the whole thing. Dude clearly knew how to keep things classy yet accessible. Now, here’s the kicker: listening to this album made me realize how much we’ve lost touch with instrumental storytelling. These days, every song has lyrics telling us what to think or feel, but Theme From Airport? Nah, it lets the music do the talking. It reminded me of flipping through an old photo album, where each snapshot tells part of a bigger story. Except instead of pictures, it’s melodies painting the scene. So yeah, give this album a spin if you want to time-travel back to 1970s US, Italy, or France (thanks, MCA Records). Just don’t blame me if you find yourself booking flights somewhere exotic after hearing “Airport Love Theme.” Weird flex, but okay.

Esse tema de filme é sensacional! De uma época mágica em que as pessoas cultivam o romantismo e existia ainda uma magia no ar. Eu tinha apenas 9 anos de idade, mas jamais esqueci a sua beleza eternizada.

Vinnie Bell was a genius who doesn't get the credit he deserves these days. He, along with Danelectro's Nate Daniel (another genius!), invented the electric sitar and used it on the hits "Green Tambourine" by Lemon Pipers and Freda Payne's "Band Of Gold" amongst many others, it was also heard on Steely Dan's "Do It Again" and was a staple of many psychediclic tracks from the 60's. He also invented the first electric 12 string guitar and played guitar for Frank Sinatra! Wotta guy!
