Mary Called Jeanie Greene: A Folk-Rock Odyssey Worth Remembering Let’s cut to the chase—Jeanie Greene’s Mary Called Jeanie Greene isn’t your run-of-the-mill 2009 album release. It’s more like stumbling upon an old vinyl at a garage sale and realizing it’s secretly golden. With genres spanning Pop, Rock, Folk, World, and Country (yeah, that’s quite the buffet), this record feels like someone threw a musical potluck where everyone brought their A-game. First off, let’s talk about “Swaziland Remembered.” This track sticks out not just because of its name—it sounds like something you'd find scribbled in a traveler's journal—but because it’s got layers. Layers so rich they make lasagna jealous. The acoustic guitar work by Jimmy Johnson and Larry Nicholson is smooth as butter, while Barry Beckett sprinkles magic on the keys. You can almost picture yourself sitting under a baobab tree with the sun setting behind you—or maybe that’s just me getting carried away. Either way, it’s hauntingly beautiful without trying too hard, which is always refreshing. Then there’s “Going Home,” which hits different. Like, emotionally smacking-you-in-the-face different. Jeanie’s vocals are raw yet polished, kinda like those jeans that look perfectly worn-in but were actually bought brand new from the store. And Claudia Lennear? Her backing vocals add this gospel vibe that makes you wanna grab hands with strangers and start swaying. By the time the tambourine kicks in (thank you, Claudia again!), you’re ready to book a one-way ticket to wherever “home” is for you. Spoiler alert: It might be inside your own heart. Now, I gotta give props to the credits section here—it reads like a who’s who of music legends. From Marlin Greene wearing multiple hats (producer, bassist, vocalist) to Wayne Perkins shredding both electric guitar AND sitar, these folks didn’t come to play; they came to slay. Oh, and shoutout to Robert L. Heimall for the artwork and photography—he made sure the visuals matched the soulfulness of the tunes. What’s wild is how this album manages to feel timeless despite being released in 2009. Maybe it’s the folk-rock backbone or the sprinkle of gospel vibes, but listening to it feels like stepping into a sepia-toned dream. Plus, knowing it bounced around countries like the US, UK, Japan, and Australia gives it this global charm that says, “Hey, we’re all connected through good music.” So yeah, if you’re looking for an album that’ll take you places without leaving your couch, Mary Called Jeanie Greene has got your back. Just don’t blame me when you end up daydreaming about Swaziland or crying during “Going Home.” Final thought? Life’s short—listen to albums that remind you why humans invented music in the first place. Or, y’know, go watch cat videos instead. Your call.

Jac Holzman, owner of Electra records said that Jeanie Greene thought that she was the reincarnation of Mary Magdalene. Mr. Storm, did she every address that with you?

I first heard this song sung by the songwriter, Tippy Armstrong, at the Ferguson Student Union in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for a tiny audience. Tippy was very beautiful at that time, and when he told us the song was about an angel, he became the angel for me. I own the album, and have never forgotten the song. He died a very untimely death, and I have never forgotten him either.

Thank you for posting. I have loved this song forever. (Well, at least since the early 70s.) Any chance you could find her version of Dixie Land?
The visuals are beautiful too... perfectly paced to the song. Stunning photographs. What a forever lovely lady!
