JKL - Zapping Music

Review by Virgil

Back in '91, Belgium gave us Zapping Music by JKL—a synth-pop gem that feels like stepping into a neon-lit arcade at midnight. Released under the Biram label, this album is one of those hidden treasures you stumble upon and can’t stop talking about. It’s not perfect, but damn if it doesn’t have soul. Let me tell ya—track two, “Synthconcerto,” hits different. The opening notes grab you like an old friend pulling you onto the dance floor. There’s something raw yet dreamy about how the synths swell and fade, almost as if they’re breathing with you. I swear, every time I hear it, I’m transported to some imaginary 80s prom where everyone’s wearing silver jackets and dancing like no one’s watching. It’s cheesy, sure, but also kinda magical. Like… yeah, life might suck right now, but for four minutes, everything feels okay again. Then there’s “Yo Te Quiero.” Oh man, this one slaps harder than expected. The rhythm kicks in, steady and infectious, while these quirky little blips dart around like fireflies on a summer night. You don’t need to speak Spanish to feel the longing in the melody—it just gets under your skin. It’s playful but bittersweet, like falling for someone who only texts you late at night. By the end, you’re left wondering why more songs don’t sound like this. The rest of the album? Solid stuff. Tracks like “French Stars” and “Going Gaga” keep things fresh without overstaying their welcome. Even the weirder moments, like “Whirlin’ Devich (Part 2),” add character—you know, the kind of oddball charm that makes you go, “Wait, what did I just listen to?” And honestly? That unpredictability keeps you hooked. Thinking back, Zapping Music feels like a love letter to experimentation. JKL wasn’t trying to reinvent the wheel here; they were just having fun, pushing buttons, seeing what stuck. Maybe that’s why it works so well—even decades later, it still sounds alive, untamed, unafraid to be itself. Funny thing though—listening to this album makes me wonder: What would’ve happened if JKL had blown up bigger? Would we still love them as much? Or would they have lost that spark that makes Zapping Music such a delightfully weird ride? Guess we’ll never know. But hey, isn’t it kinda beautiful that they stayed right where they are—in our hearts, headphones, and maybe someday, yours too.
