Lee Perry & The Upsetters - Musical Bones draft

Musical Bones Draft by Lee Perry & The Upsetters: A Reggae Odyssey That Feels Like Home Let’s get one thing straight—Lee “Scratch” Perry wasn’t just making music when he put together Musical Bones Draft. He was conjuring vibes, painting soundscapes, and straight-up messing with your soul. Released in 1997 on the Justice League label (yeah, that’s a real thing), this album is an underrated gem in the reggae world. It’s not flashy or polished; it’s raw, unfiltered, and dripping with character. If you’re into reggae instrumentals that feel like they’ve been soaked in Jamaican sunsets and late-night dub experiments, then buckle up. The lineup here reads like a dream team of reggae royalty: Boris Gardiner laying down basslines so thick you could spread ‘em on toast, Winston Wright tickling the organ keys like it owes him money, and Vin Gordon blowing trombone riffs that hit you right in the chest. And let’s not forget Lee himself—always lurking somewhere in the mix, adding his trademark chaos through percussion and production wizardry. Now, onto the tracks. I gotta shout out “Fly Away” first because damn, this tune feels like floating. From the opening notes, Earl Smith’s guitar work dances around Geoffrey Chung’s leads like two old friends catching up after years apart. There’s something about how the horns swell in the background—it’s uplifting but also kinda bittersweet, like saying goodbye to someone you love but knowing they’ll be okay. You don’t even need lyrics for this one; the melody says everything words can’t. Every time I hear it, I close my eyes and picture myself sitting on some cliffside in Jamaica, watching the waves crash below while the wind messes up my hair. Pure magic. Then there’s “Licky-Licky,” which might have the funniest title ever but don’t let that fool you—it slaps HARD. This track is all swagger, driven by Mikey “Boo” Benbow’s drumming that just won’t quit. It’s playful yet gritty, like a game of tag where everyone’s laughing but still trying to win. The interplay between the horns and the rhythm section creates this hypnotic groove that makes you wanna move whether you mean to or not. Honestly, if this song came on at a party, I’d probably embarrass myself dancing too hard. No regrets though—it’s THAT infectious. What really sticks with me about Musical Bones Draft isn’t just the music itself—it’s the vibe. Listening to this album feels like stepping into Lee Perry’s brain for an hour, and trust me, that’s both thrilling and slightly terrifying. His fingerprints are all over every track, from the quirky arrangements to those little moments of sonic weirdness that make you go, “Wait…did I just hear a cowbell?” But instead of feeling random, it all fits together like pieces of a puzzle only Scratch knows how to solve. Here’s the kicker: despite being released in 1997, this album doesn’t feel tied to any particular era. It’s timeless in its own strange way, like finding a dusty vinyl in a thrift store and realizing it’s exactly what you’ve been searching for without even knowing it. So yeah, give Musical Bones Draft a spin. Let it wash over you, confuse you, and maybe even heal you a little. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself humming “Licky-Licky” for days. Oh, and if anyone asks why you’re randomly grinning while listening? Tell ‘em it’s the bones talking.
