Leon Mar - Running Tha Men Who Fell To Earth

Review by Bill Douglas

Running Tha Men Who Fell To Earth: A Drum ‘n’ Bass Odyssey That Still Hits Hard Let’s get one thing straight—Leon Mar’s Running Tha Men Who Fell To Earth isn’t just an album; it’s a vibe. Released in 1996 under Reinforced Records, this UK-born gem is the kind of record you stumble upon late at night when everything else feels too predictable. It’s raw, unfiltered, and dripping with that early drum ‘n’ bass energy that makes your chest rattle like a broken washing machine. First off, let’s talk about the title track, “Tha Men Who Fell To Earth.” This tune? Absolute fire. The moment those haunting synths creep in, it feels like stepping into some dystopian sci-fi flick where the aliens are cooler than humans. There’s something hypnotic about how Leon layers the beats—it’s chaotic but never messy, like he knew exactly what buttons to press to mess with your brain. And don’t even get me started on the drop. That sucker slaps so hard, I swear my neighbors thought someone was jackhammering through the wall. You can tell this wasn’t made by committee—it’s got personality, grit, and soul oozing outta every bar. Then there’s “Running,” which flips the script entirely. Where “Tha Men” leans cosmic, “Running” goes straight for the jugular. The bassline here doesn’t just thump—it growls, like a pissed-off tiger pacing back and forth. The breakbeats are chopped up so tight they sound like they’re trying to outrun themselves. Honestly, this track sticks with me because it feels alive. Every time I hear it, I picture neon-lit streets and shadowy figures darting between alleyways. It’s cinematic without being pretentious, if that makes sense. What really gets me, though, is how hands-on Leon Mar was with this project. Dude wrote AND produced the whole thing, which explains why it feels so cohesive. Back then, Reinforced Records was already known for pushing boundaries, but Leon took things to another level. He didn’t just make music—he crafted worlds. Worlds you could lose yourself in, even if only for forty minutes. Looking back now, almost three decades later, Running Tha Men Who Fell To Earth still holds its own. Sure, production techniques have evolved, and modern DnB has more polish, but this album reminds us why we fell in love with the genre in the first place. It’s not perfect—in fact, sometimes it sounds kinda rough around the edges—but maybe that’s the point. Maybe perfection isn’t the goal. Maybe it’s about capturing lightning in a bottle, even if the bottle cracks a little along the way. Oh, and here’s the kicker—I listened to this while waiting for my toaster to finish making toast, and suddenly, breakfast felt epic. Like, superhero-level epic. If that ain’t proof of greatness, I dunno what is.

One of my absolute favorites of my childhood... I must've played this a million times. Reminds me of Summer time in Berlin...

Edit= Leon Mar also produced under his alias "Torus" on Reinforced Rec. I highly recommend "Torus - Contours" which is an incredible atmospheric, beautiful DnB track and totally underrated.
Leon Mar also assisted on 4Hero's "Two Pages" double LP.

Like Flytronix, Dom&Roland or Optical a studio wizard highly respected by actual Drum & Bass producer for his studio techniques...just listen to his tracks under his Arcon2 alias and you will know what I mean...
