Album Review: Symphonie Nr. V C Moll Op. 67 & Egmont Ouvertüre Op. 84 by Ludwig van Beethoven Alright, let’s talk about this gem of a record—Symphonie Nr. V C Moll Op. 67 & Egmont Ouvertüre Op. 84. It’s one of those albums that feels like it was made for both your headphones and your soul. Released in 1959 on Decca (Germany), it features Ludwig van Beethoven at his finest, brought to life by Ernest Ansermet conducting the Orchestre De La Suisse Romande. The whole thing is steeped in Romantic and Classical vibes, but don’t expect stiff wigs and powdered noses here; this album breathes fire. Let me break it down for ya. Two tracks stuck with me like gum under a shoe: "1. Satz: Allegro Con Brio" and "Egmont Ouvertüre, Op. 84." First off, “Allegro Con Brio” kicks things off with that iconic four-note motif everyone knows—even if they don’t realize it. You’ve heard it in movies, memes, maybe even an annoying car commercial once. But hearing it performed by Ansermet and his orchestra? Man, it hits different. There’s just something raw about how tight the strings are, how punchy the brass comes through. Roy Wallace, the engineer, deserves props too because the sound quality holds up shockingly well for '59. Every note lands like thunder, and before you know it, you're swept away into Beethoven’s stormy world. By the time the movement ends, you kinda feel like you've been through something. Like, emotionally drained but also weirdly energized. Then there’s “Egmont Ouvertüre.” If I had to pick my favorite track from this album, this would be it. This piece tells a story without saying a word—it’s dramatic, intense, and honestly feels cinematic as hell. The way the music builds tension, then explodes into triumph—it’s like watching a movie trailer where everything clicks perfectly into place. Honestly, listening to this makes me wanna grab a sword and lead some kind of rebellion. Not really, but you get what I mean. It’s powerful stuff. One thing worth mentioning is the liner notes by Dr. Hans Koeltzsch. They’re not just boring history lessons—they give context to these pieces in a way that actually makes you appreciate them more. James Walker, the producer, clearly knew what he was doing when he put this team together. Everything feels intentional, polished yet alive. So yeah, this album isn’t just another dusty relic of classical music—it’s got heart. And while most people might think of Beethoven as some old-school composer who only appeals to academics or snobs, this recording proves otherwise. It’s passionate, emotional, and still relevant today. Final thought? Listening to this album reminded me of why we turn to music in the first place—to feel something bigger than ourselves. Also, fun fact: Did you know Beethoven started going deaf while writing his Fifth Symphony? Makes you wonder if he ever imagined someone like Ansermet interpreting his work decades later. Crazy, right? Anyways, go listen to this masterpiece—you won’t regret it.

German composer and pianist, born in 1770 (baptized 17 December 1770) in Bonn, Germany and died 26 March 1827 in Vienna, Austria. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in classical music. Beethoven led Viennese Classicism to its highest development and paved the way for Romantic music. Beethoven was the eldest son of a singer in the Kapelle of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and grandson of the Archbishop's Kapellmeister. He moved in 1792 to Vienna, where he had some lessons from Haydn and others, quickly establishing himself as a remarkable keyboard-player and original composer. By 1815 increasing deafness made public performance impossible and accentuated existing eccentricities of character, patiently tolerated by a series of rich patrons and his royal pupil the Archduke Rudolph. Beethoven did much to enlarge the possibilities of music and widen the horizons of later generations of composers. To his contemporaries he was sometimes a controversial figure, making heavy demands on listeners both by the length and by the complexity of his writing, as he explored new fields of music.
