Fire On The Mountain by Mickey Hart & Friends: A Psychedelic Rock Odyssey Worth the Spin Alright, so you’ve probably stumbled across this review because you’re curious about Fire On The Mountain, the 1995 album by Mickey Hart & Friends. Maybe you’re a Deadhead (Jerry Garcia fan) or just someone who digs trippy rock vibes with a side of cosmic weirdness. Either way, buckle up—this one’s got layers. First off, let’s talk context. This thing dropped in Japan under Planet Records and Conquer, which already gives it that “import-only gem” vibe. The lineup? Absolutely stacked. We’re talking legends like Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Mike Bloomfield, and Papa John Creach, among others. These guys weren’t messing around—they brought their A-game for this project. And yeah, it’s psychedelic rock through and through, but there’s something raw and unpolished about it that makes it feel alive. Now, onto the tracks. There are 21 of them (yep, 21!), so I’ll zoom in on two that stuck with me after giving the album a few spins. Track 10: “Fire On The Mountain” Okay, obviously, the title track had to deliver—and man, does it ever. It’s not overly flashy, but it’s got this hypnotic groove that sneaks up on you. The rhythm section is tight as hell, and when the guitar kicks in, it feels like you’re floating downstream on some neon-lit river. You know those songs where you lose track of time? Yeah, this is one of those. What stays with me most is how effortlessly it blends chaos and calm—it’s wild but never out of control. If you’re into music that feels like a journey rather than just a tune, this one’s gonna grab you. Track 14: “Ghost Riders In The Sky” This cover took me by surprise. I mean, how do you even approach a song that’s been done a million times? But these guys nail it. They keep the spooky cowboy vibe intact while adding their own twist—a little more grit, a lot more soul. The harmonies hit hard, and the instrumentation has this dusty, cinematic quality that makes you picture tumbleweeds rolling across an empty desert. It’s haunting but also kinda fun, if that makes sense. Like, you could blast it at midnight and scare your neighbors OR crank it up during a road trip. Versatility for the win! The rest of the album? Solid all around. Tracks like “Checker Man,” “Fear,” and “Love Is A Mystery” bring different flavors to the table, keeping things fresh. Some moments drag a bit, sure, but overall, it’s packed with enough energy and creativity to keep you hooked. Here’s the thing: listening to Fire On The Mountain feels less like hearing an album and more like hanging out with a bunch of talented friends jamming in someone’s garage. It’s messy in parts, but that’s what makes it human. Plus, knowing that Jerry Garcia was involved adds this bittersweet layer—it’s like peeking into another world he helped create before his passing. So yeah, would I recommend it? Totally. But don’t expect perfection. Expect personality, passion, and plenty of head-nodding grooves. Oh, and here’s a random thought: if aliens ever visited Earth and asked for proof of our musical evolution, handing them this album wouldn’t be the worst idea. Just saying.

When I saw The Other Ones do this in 1998. I figured it was a new arrangement. TIL it was the original.

Thanks for posting, I finally figure out the source for this. An old Dead radio show from 30 years ago called Thursday Lunch (aired every Friday evening of course) in LA played this Mickey sung FOTM once and I taped it, and had it all these years but never researched its origin. But here it is.
