Album Review: Lucky Lips / I'll Never Get Over You by Mike Redway Mike Redway’s Lucky Lips / I’ll Never Get Over You is a curious little gem that straddles the line between pop and rock with surprising charm. Released under the Spanish label Vergara, this album leans heavily into vocal-driven melodies, showcasing Redway's knack for crafting tunes that stick in your head long after the record stops spinning. While it might not reinvent the wheel, it’s got enough personality to make you sit up and take notice. Let’s talk tracks. The titular “Lucky Lips” kicks things off with an infectious energy that feels like sunshine on a summer day. It’s one of those songs where the beat grabs you by the shoulders and insists you tap your feet. The lyrics are simple but effective—Redway sings about love and longing with just enough sincerity to keep it from feeling cheesy. What really stands out here is how polished yet unpretentious the production feels. You can tell they weren’t trying too hard, which makes it all the more enjoyable. It’s the kind of track that could easily become a guilty pleasure if it weren’t so darn likable. Then there’s “I’ll Never Get Over You,” a slower, more introspective number that shows off Redway’s vocal chops. This one hits different—it’s less about catchy hooks and more about emotional resonance. The melody builds gradually, letting the listener sink into its melancholy vibe. There’s something raw about the way Redway delivers lines like “I’ll never get over you,” almost as if he’s whispering secrets directly into your ear. If “Lucky Lips” is the life of the party, this track is the quiet moment afterward when everyone leaves and you’re left staring at the empty room. One thing worth noting is how these two songs represent different sides of the same coin. They highlight Redway’s versatility without straying too far from his core style. Sure, some parts feel a bit dated now (hello, 60s vibes), but isn’t that part of the appeal? Listening to this album feels like stepping back in time, albeit with modern sensibilities peeking through. On reflection, what strikes me most about Lucky Lips / I’ll Never Get Over You is how effortlessly it balances fun and depth. It doesn’t try to be anything other than what it is—a solid collection of well-crafted tunes designed to make you feel something. And honestly, isn’t that what music should do? Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself humming “Lucky Lips” while stuck in traffic or tearing up during “I’ll Never Get Over You” late at night. That’s the magic of Mike Redway—he sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Oh, and here’s the kicker: despite being tied to Spain, this album has universal appeal. Who knew Vergara could pull off such a timeless sound?
