Neil Young - On The Farm

Neil Young’s On The Farm: A Rustic Ride Through Timeless Tunes Let’s get one thing straight: Neil Young doesn’t need to try too hard anymore. The guy could probably hum into a tin can and still make it sound profound. But with On The Farm, released in 2015 under Refractor Records, he gives us something that feels like an old friend stopping by for coffee—familiar, comforting, but also kinda quirky. This album is steeped in genres like Rock, Folk, World, & Country, with a style leaning heavily on Folk Rock. And while Europe might not be where you’d expect this farm to exist, here we are. Now, let me tell you about two tracks from this collection of live performances at various Farm Aid gigs (yes, those benefit concerts for farmers). These songs stuck with me because they’re classic Neil—raw, unpolished, and dripping with soul. First up: “Down By The River” (Farm Aid VII). If you’ve ever heard the studio version, buckle up, because this rendition kicks it up a notch. It’s got that same haunting vibe, but there’s something magical about hearing Young belt out those lyrics live. Like, imagine standing ankle-deep in mud during sunset, thinking about life choices—that’s what this track feels like. His guitar work? Pure fire. You can practically smell the hay bales burning as he shreds through the solo. Then there’s “Rockin’ In The Free World” (Farm Aid IV), which is just… wow. I mean, how do you even mess with perfection? Spoiler alert: You don’t. This performance hits harder than your average rock anthem because it’s drenched in urgency. When Young screams, “Keep on rockin’ in the free world!” it doesn’t feel like some generic rally cry—it feels personal, like he’s shouting directly at you over a fence post. The energy is electric, messy, and absolutely unforgettable. Plus, who wouldn’t want to air-guitar along to this one while pretending they’re saving democracy or whatever? The rest of the album has its gems too—“Heart of Gold,” “Old Man,” all the usual suspects—but these two tracks stand out like stubborn weeds in a cornfield. They remind you why Neil Young remains relevant decades later. He’s not chasing trends; he’s planting roots. So yeah, On The Farm isn’t perfect. Some transitions feel clunky, and sure, it’s basically a compilation of greatest hits played live. But honestly? That’s part of its charm. It’s less of an album and more of a scrapbook—a patchwork quilt stitched together with sweat, dirt, and heartstrings. Listening to it feels like flipping through faded Polaroids of better days. And here’s the kicker: if Neil Young decided tomorrow to retire and raise alpacas instead, I’d respect the heck outta that decision. Because dude’s earned it.
