Album Review: Void by Novadriver (2001) Alright, let’s talk about Void, the kinda overlooked gem from Novadriver. Released back in 2001 under Small Stone Records and Cargo Records, this album is a wild ride through Stoner Rock territory with some Pop/Rock vibes sneaking in here and there. If you’re into fuzzy guitars, groovy basslines, and that raw, gritty energy only rock can deliver, then buckle up—this one’s for you. First off, hats off to Billy Reedy on vocals and James B. Anders holding down both guitar and bass duties. These guys don’t mess around. Eric Miller lays down some serious drum work too, while Mark Miers adds just enough organ to give it that retro kick. And props to The Rust Brothers as producers—they kept things tight without over-polishing the grit outta this thing. Now, onto the tracks. There’s a lot of them, but two really stuck with me: “Shoot The Sky” and “Seasons of Wither.” “Shoot The Sky” hits hard right outta the gate. It’s got this driving rhythm that feels like you’re revving an engine at full throttle. You know those songs where the chorus just sticks in your head? Yeah, that’s this one. I kept humming it hours after listening. The mix of Billy’s raspy vocals and James’ crunchy riffs creates this perfect storm of rebellion and swagger. Plus, Eric’s drumming gives it this relentless push that makes you wanna crank up the volume and let loose. Then there’s “Seasons of Wither,” which flips the vibe entirely. This track slows things down, almost like taking a breather after all the chaos. It’s hauntingly beautiful, man. The guitar melodies feel mournful yet hopeful, and Billy’s voice has this weary tone that pulls you in. By the time the organ kicks in, you’re fully immersed—it’s like watching leaves fall in slow motion during autumn. Weirdly poetic, huh? One thing I noticed is how cohesive the whole album feels despite its length. Tracks like “Spinning Into No Future” and “Particle Explosion” keep the energy high, while others like “Sleep” and “End of the Universe” bring depth and variety. Gary Spaniola did a bang-up job mastering this beast; every instrument sits perfectly in the mix. Oh, and quick shoutout to Keith Scharwath and Mike Sanders for the killer artwork and design. That cover art screams cosmic doom, which fits the vibe of the music perfectly. Props to Alan Sutton and Robert Ebeling on engineering duties too—they captured the band’s raw power without losing any detail. So yeah, Void might not have blown up charts back in ’01, but it’s one of those albums that stays with you. It’s not perfect—some tracks could’ve been trimmed—but damn if it doesn’t leave an impression. Listening to it feels like stepping into another world, one filled with rocket ships, existential dread, and killer riffs. Funny thing though—after spinning this album, I started wondering what happened to Novadriver. Did they disband? Go solo? Start making polka music? Who knows. But hey, maybe that mystery adds to the charm. Either way, Void deserves more love than it gets. Check it out—you won’t regret it.
