Album Review: Five O’Clock My Ass Lets Tango by Ottorongo (1991) Alright, buckle up, because this one’s a wild ride through the gritty, pulsating heart of Belgian electronic music. Released in 1991 under Holy Hole Music, Five O’Clock My Ass Lets Tango is an absolute beast of an album that’ll slap you awake faster than five cups of coffee at three in the morning—yeah, I said it. Produced by Christoff Wybouw and co-written with Serge Feys, who also engineered and programmed the whole shebang, this record is like a sweaty rave trapped inside your headphones. It blends hardcore, techno, and house into something chaotic, raw, and oddly unforgettable. Let’s dive into two tracks that’ll stick to your brain like gum on a hot sidewalk: “Five O’Clock… My Ass” and “Let’s Tango In The House.” First off, “Five O’Clock… My Ass.” If you’ve ever been stuck in traffic or waiting for a train that never shows up, this track gets it. The beat hits hard, like someone yelling at you to snap out of your boring routine. There’s no time for chill vibes here—this song grabs you by the collar and drags you onto the dance floor. With its relentless kicks and eerie synths, it feels like the musical equivalent of being chased by a pack of dogs while wearing roller skates. And yet, somehow, it works. You can’t help but move to it. It’s angry, it’s messy, but damn if it doesn’t feel cathartic as hell. Then there’s “Let’s Tango In The House,” which flips the energy entirely. This one’s got swagger. Imagine strutting down a neon-lit street in Brussels, cigarette dangling from your lips, feeling untouchable. That bassline? Pure gold. It grooves so deep you might just forget where you are for a second. The mix of tango-inspired rhythms with thumping house beats creates this weird Frankenstein hybrid that shouldn’t work—but oh man, does it ever. By the end of the track, you’re convinced you could tango your way out of any awkward situation life throws at you. The rest of the album keeps the chaos alive, including remixes like “Three O’Clock Rap Remix,” which adds even more layers of insanity. But honestly, after hearing those first couple tracks, you’ll either be hooked or questioning every life choice that led you here. Either way, mission accomplished. Reflecting on Five O’Clock My Ass Lets Tango, it strikes me how ahead of its time this album was. Back in ’91, when most people were still figuring out what techno even meant, Ottorongo came out swinging with something unapologetically weird and bold. Sure, it’s not perfect—it’s rough around the edges, kinda like a DIY punk zine—but maybe that’s why it sticks. It reminds us that music doesn’t have to be polished to make an impact. Sometimes, all it needs is guts and a little bit of madness. And hey, fun fact: listening to this album makes mornings slightly less miserable. Who knew screaming “My ass!” at 7 AM could feel so liberating?

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: Back in 1991, a Belgian electronic album called *Five O’Clock… My Ass, Let’s Tango!!!* turned heads with its wild mix of hardcore, techno, and house beats. The mastermind behind it? Christoff Wybouw, who not only produced the album but also co-wrote it with Serge Feys. Feys pulled double duty as both the engineer and programmer, giving the record its sharp, energetic edge. What’s even cooler? The album features multiple versions of the same tracks, including a remix called the "Three O’Clock Rap Remix." It’s like they couldn’t decide which version was the best, so they just gave us all of them! Released on Holy Hole Music, this gem is still a cult favorite for fans of early '90s electronic music.

When the local authorities forced the legendary Boccaccio club in Destelbergen near Ghent (Belgium) to close at 5 a.m. this record was released as a protest against that measure. After 5 a.m. the entire party crowd used to drive to the nearby after club Balmoral, causing massive traffic jams. This scenery repeated itself on a weekly basis for years..
