Pat Travers – A Raw, Bluesy Blast from 1976 That Still Kicks Ass If you’re into rock with a side of grit and soul, the self-titled debut album Pat Travers is worth spinning at least once (or ten times). Released in ‘76, this record straddles genres like a musical chameleon—blues, hard rock, classic rock, even some cheeky hints of rock 'n' roll swagger. It’s got enough energy to power a small city, and trust me, it doesn’t feel like your typical “first effort.” Produced by Emil Zoghby alongside Pat himself, it's clear they weren’t messing around when they hit record. Let’s talk tracks for a sec. First up: “Boom Boom (Out Goes The Lights)”. This one slaps harder than an overzealous dad on New Year’s Eve. With its punchy riffs and Roy Dyke’s drumming keeping things tight as a snare wire, it’s impossible not to nod along. Pat’s guitar work here feels like he’s channeling lightning bolts straight outta the sky. And those vocals? Dude sounds like he just rolled out of a smoky bar after playing all night but still has enough juice left to tear the roof off. You can practically smell the whiskey fumes wafting through the speakers. Every time I hear that chorus—"Boom boom, out go the lights!"—it’s like someone flipped a switch inside my brain that says, “Dance or die.” Then there’s “Snortin’ Whiskey”, which is exactly what it sounds like—a rowdy anthem about living life fast and loose. The groove hits so hard it might make your grandma want to throw down her knitting needles and join the party. Peter ‘Clog’ Cowling lays down some seriously funky basslines while Pat shreds his way through solos that sound like pure rebellion bottled up in six strings. There’s something oddly satisfying about how unapologetically raw this track feels—it doesn’t try too hard to be clever; it just is. Plus, who wouldn’t wanna shout “snortin’ whiskey!” at the top of their lungs during karaoke night? What makes this album stand out isn’t just the music itself—it’s the vibe. From Paul Welch’s groovy cover art to the tight-knit chemistry between Travers and his bandmates, it’s clear everyone involved poured their hearts into this project. Even the liner notes by Dave Ling give you a sense of history behind the chaos. Fun fact: the album dropped across multiple countries—including France, Germany, Japan, and good ol’ Canada—which means fans worldwide got to experience Pat’s unique blend of blues-rock goodness. But let’s get real for a moment. Listening to this album today feels kinda bittersweet. Sure, it’s packed with killer tunes, but it also reminds us how rare albums like this are nowadays. In an era where playlists rule and attention spans are shorter than ever, sitting down with a full-length record like Pat Travers feels almost revolutionary. Maybe that’s why it sticks with you long after the last note fades. So yeah, if you’re looking for something that’ll crank your stereo to eleven and leave you grinning like an idiot, grab yourself a copy of Pat Travers. Just don’t blame me if your neighbors start complaining—they probably don’t know what real rock ‘n’ roll sounds like anyway. Oh, and fun bonus: listen to it while driving fast on an open road. Trust me, it works wonders.

Interesting fact about Album

Here's an interesting fact: Pat Travers' self-titled 1976 album is a wild ride through multiple rock styles, blending blues, hard rock, and classic rock seamlessly. One fun detail? The track "Boom Boom (Out Goes The Lights)" appears on the album several times with slightly different titles—like "Boom Boom (out Go The Lights)" and "Boom Boom (Out Go the Lights)." It’s almost as if the song had its own little identity crisis! Plus, it’s cool to see how many countries got their hands on this record, from the US to Japan, showing just how universal great rock music can be.

Solo Blues Rock guitarist abound in USA and UK, but also Canada had its share from the 70's. One of the most longeval solo acts of such kind is Pat Travers, which has released more than 20 solo albums, and except some with Carmine Appice, he never played with any other band or side project. His 1976 self-titled debut is strictly by-the-numbers The Jimi Hendrix Experience/The Rolling Stones/Led Zeppelin-like Hard Rock with blues-y vocals, pentatonic runs/riffs and Pop-oriented songwriting. For lovers of the style, the album is recommended, but for anyone else, the repetition of E/A/D minr-major elementary songwriting is just beyond basic.
