Radio Silence - Frosts

Frosts by Radio Silence: A Dreamy, Frostbitten Journey Through Ambient Soundscapes Let’s cut to the chase—Frosts is one of those albums that sneaks up on you like a quiet snowfall. Released in 2012 by Russian electronic outfit Radio Silence (aka Alexey Markov wearing all the hats), this downtempo gem feels less like an album and more like wandering into someone’s dream diary. It’s ambient, it’s new age-y, and at times, it’s so mellow you might forget you’re listening to music altogether. But don’t let its chill vibe fool you; there’s depth here, folks. First off, kudos to Mike Winchester for mastering and designing the concept because the whole package screams “I belong in your favorite indie coffee shop.” And Anna Riet’s artwork? Perfectly frosty without being cheesy. Speaking of frosty, Anatoliy Laptev’s photography adds that extra sprinkle of wintery melancholy. This isn’t just an album—it’s a vibe. Now, onto the tracks. With titles like Kate Sleeps Part II: Dreams and Winter Comes Again (5th December), you can tell Alexey had some serious storytelling ambitions. Let’s zoom in on two standouts: Track Spotlight: "Everlasting Winter" This track hits different. Imagine lying under a blanket while staring out at a frozen wasteland—that’s Everlasting Winter. The synths are icy but oddly comforting, like hot cocoa with too much marshmallow fluff. There’s something about how the melody loops around itself, pulling you deeper into its frosty embrace. You know those moments when you're stuck between sleep and wakefulness? Yeah, this song lives there. I kept coming back to it because it's haunting yet strangely cozy—a paradox wrapped in sound. Track Spotlight: "Distant Luminescence (Messier Galaxy M101)" Okay, who names their kid Messier Galaxy M101? Kidding aside, this track is straight-up cosmic poetry. It starts slow, almost hesitant, then blooms into this shimmering galaxy of sound. If you’ve ever wondered what floating through space would feel like while slightly buzzed, this is your jam. The layers build subtly, making you lean in closer as if expecting secrets from the universe. Spoiler alert: the universe doesn’t talk back, but dang, does it sound pretty doing it. --- What makes Frosts stick is its ability to evoke emotion without trying too hard. Sure, some tracks blend together after a while, but isn’t that kinda the point? It’s not here to demand your attention—it’s here to exist alongside you, like a loyal cat curled up on your lap. Or maybe a grumpy Siberian husky refusing to fetch sticks. Either way, it works. Here’s the kicker: despite its chilly theme, Frosts feels weirdly human. Maybe it’s Alexey Markov’s soft vocals or the way every note seems crafted with care. Whatever it is, it leaves you feeling both introspective and oddly hopeful. Like yeah, winter sucks sometimes, but hey, look at those stars. Final thought: If Elon Musk ever colonizes Mars, he should blast Frosts through the speakers during launch. Nothing says “new beginnings” quite like eternal winters and distant galaxies. Just saying.
