Album Review: Roy Head’s Tonight’s The Night (1978) Alright, so let me tell ya about this gem from the late '70s—Roy Head’s Tonight’s The Night. It’s one of those albums that kinda sneaks up on you. At first glance, it’s just another pop-rock record with a dash of soul and country vibes. But once you dive into it, man, there’s some real magic hiding in there. Released under ABC Records back in 1978, this thing is packed with tracks written by none other than Rod Stewart himself. Yeah, THAT Rod Stewart. And Jimmy Bowen on production? Dude knows how to make a tune feel alive. Now, if I had to pick two tracks that stuck with me, hands down it’d be “Tonight’s The Night (It’s Gonna Be Alright)” and “Smooth Whiskey.” Let’s start with the title track. You know when a song has like three versions crammed onto an album? That’s what we’ve got here—stereo, mono, AND regular. But honestly? This version’s got swagger. Like, legit cool-guy confidence. Rod Stewart wrote it, but Roy makes it his own. The groove hits hard enough to get your feet tapping, and the lyrics are simple yet somehow comforting. It’s one of those songs where you can almost picture yourself cruising down a desert highway at sunset. Feels good, right? Then there’s “Smooth Whiskey.” Oh man, this one grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. It’s got this gritty bluesy edge mixed with blue-eyed soul, and Alan Moore’s arrangement really brings out the drama. Roy’s voice cracks just enough to sell the emotion without sounding overdone. Plus, who doesn’t love a song about whiskey? It’s not trying too hard—it just WORKS. Every time I hear it, I think about smoky bars and heartbreak stories scribbled on napkins. Classic stuff. The rest of the album keeps things interesting too. Tracks like “Pieces Of My Life” and “Love Survived” lean more toward traditional country ballads, while cuts like “Don’t You Love Her” bring back that pop-rock punch. Even the quirky little number “Dixie” throws you for a loop—it’s short, sweet, and kinda reminds me of sitting on a porch somewhere deep in the South. The diversity across genres works because Roy nails each style without feeling forced. Here’s the kicker though: as much as I dig this album, it feels like one of those records people forgot about over time. Maybe it was overshadowed by bigger names or flashier releases around the same era. Whatever the reason, it deserves more love. Like, seriously, why isn’t this album blasting outta speakers everywhere? Final thought? Listening to Tonight’s The Night feels like finding an old vinyl in your grandma’s attic. It’s dusty, maybe a bit scratched up, but once you drop the needle… damn. Unexpectedly awesome.
